High Performance Centers are organizational structures in which university and non-university research can be conducted hand in hand with industry. They are characterized by well-defined, end-to-end roadmaps in which the partners attribute equal value to research and education, promotion of young scientists, infrastructure, innovation and knowledge transfer. The Centers invite political decision-makers to modify their priorities by proving that scientific excellence can be developed with benefits to society. Example: “The Berlin Center for Digital Transformation” © Fraunhofer HHI | Date | 40

The Berlin Center for Digital Transformation… … is a collaborative venture involving Fraunhofer FOKUS, HHI, IPK and IZM focuses on technologies & solutions that recognize the increasing digitalization and networking in every area of our lives. Research is divided between basic and interface technologies and solutions in four defined areas of application: Health and medicine – Mobility and the city of the future – Industry and production Critical infrastructure In joining together , the partners hope to pool their expertise in the domains of ICT, data handling and processing, development and supply of electronic systems, and production and microelectronics. The key concern is to harness the synergies among these areas and thus cater to the whole digital networking technology chain. © Fraunhofer HHI | Date | 41

The Berlin Center for Digital Transformation… Berlin is home to also other renowned research

The Berlin Center for Digital Transformation… Berlin is home to also other renowned research facilities, universities, businesses and a lively start-up scene, is the ideal location for such an undertaking. The Center hopes to make use of these assets to drive digital networking in Germany and abroad forward, and to position Berlin as a hub for the next wave of digitalization. Industry partners have the opportunity to collaborate with the Fraunhofer Institutes involved in the Center in research projects. Such projects enjoy access to the institutes’ existing technology infrastructure and offer the advantage of a direct transfer of research findings into practice. The Berlin Center for Digital Transformation works closely alongside the Technische Universität Berlin, in particular with the faculties of mathematics and natural sciences, electrical engineering and computer science, and transport and machine systems. The Center is sponsored by the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research. © Fraunhofer HHI | Date | 42
