Samuel Luke Fildes pintor e ilustrador ingls nasceu

Samuel Luke Fildes, pintor e ilustrador inglês, nasceu em Liverpool, em 3 de outubro de 1843. Aos dezessete anos, Fildes tornou-se estudante da “Warrington School of Art”. Depois estudou na “South Kensington Art School”. As ilustrações de Fildes eram no estilo preto e branco popular na França e na Alemanha durante a época. Ele trabalhava em um estilo realista social, compatível com a direção editorial do “The Graphic”, e focava em imagens representando os destituídos de Londres. Na primeira edição do “The Graphic”, publicada em dezembro de 1869, Fildes foi convidado a fornecer uma ilustração para acompanhar um artigo sobre o “Houseless Poor Act”, uma nova medida que permitiu que algumas das pessoas desempregadas se abrigassem por uma noite em Londres. As ilustrações de Fildes também apareceram em outros periódicos de grande circulação e, também ilustrou vários livros. Self-Portrait, 1911

Fildes logo se tornou um artista popular e em 1870 ele desistiu de trabalhar para o “The Graphic” e voltou sua atenção para a pintura a óleo. Ele também pintou uma série de fotos da vida veneziana e muitos retratos notáveis, entre eles retratos comemorativos da coroação do rei Eduardo VII e da rainha Alexandra. Em 1874, ele se casou com Fanny Woods. Seu primeiro filho, Philip, morreu de tuberculose em 1877 e, inspirou o trabalho de 1891 de Fildes, “The Doctor”. Ele foi eleito “Associate of the Royal Academy” em 1879 e “Royal Academician” em 1887. Em 1906 foi condecorado pelo rei Edward VII. Em 1918, ele foi nomeado “Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order” pelo rei George V. Morreu em Londres, em 28 de fevereiro de 1927. Venetian Girl with a Flask, 1870
