Philip Hermogenes Calderón , pintor inglês de ascendência espanhola e francesa, nasceu em Poitiers, França, em 3 de maio de 1833. Calderón estudou na escola de James M. Leigh em Londres em 1850, depois em Paris no ateliê de François-Édouard Picot. Exibiu sua primeira pintura na “Royal Academy”, (“By the Waters of Babylon”), em 1853, e, posteriormente, tornou-se um expositor regular até 1897. Inicialmente, ele foi inspirado no estilo Pré-Rafaelita, e alguns de seus trabalhos mostram o detalhe, as cores profundas e as formas realistas que caracterizam o estilo. Calderón tornou-se um dos líderes do “St John's Wood Clique”. Temas históricos, bíblicos e literários eram comuns no trabalho posterior de Calderón. Muitas de suas obras mostram formas femininas vestindo roupas ricas, sedosas, com detalhes de paisagens coloridas. Calderón tornou-se “Keeper of the Royal Academy” em 1887, e desde então trabalhou para apoiar o ensino de anatomia, com base em modelos nuas na “Royal Academy Schools ”. Morreu em Londres, em 30 de abril de 1898.

Biography: Philip Hermogenes Calderón was an English painter from Spanish and French ancestors, born

Biography: Philip Hermogenes Calderón was an English painter from Spanish and French ancestors, born in Poitiers, France, in May 3, 1833. Calderón studied at the school of James M. Leigh in London, in 1850, and later in Paris in the studio of François-Édouard Picot. He exhibited his first work in the "Royal Academy', (By the Waters of Babylon"), on 1853. and, later, he became an usual exhibitor until 1897. At first, he was inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite style, and some of his works show the detail, deep colors and realistic forms that characterized the style. Calderón became one of the leaders of the "St. John's Wood Clique". Historic, biblical and literary themes were common in the further work of Calderón. Many of his paintings depict female forms wearing rich and silky robes, with details of colorful landscapes. Calderón became "Keeper of the Royal Academy" in 1887, and since then he worked to support the teaching of anatomy based in naked models at the "Royal Academy Schools ". He died in London on April 30, 1898. A Rose of Provence
