Biography: Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born in Capresse, Italy, on March 6, 1475. He was a painter, sculptor, poet and Italian architect, and is considered as one of the greatest creators of the History of Western Art. Michelangelo lived during the last phase of the transition from the Renaissance to the Manneirism, a time of deep social conflicts and deep changes in cultural life. Like most painters and sculptors of the time, Michelangelo began his artistic career as an apprentice of the brothers David and Domenico Ghirlandaio. As soon as his talent was recognized, he was sent to Florença and became a “protégé” of the Medicis, for whom he made several works. He joined the School of Lorenzo de Medici, where he remained for two years (1490 -1492). In Florence, he received artistic influences of several painters and intellectuals of that time, as the city was a major center of cultural production. In 1492 Michelangelo went to the Italian city of Bologna, where he remained for four years. In 1496 he received an invitation from the Cardinal San Giorgio and moved to Rome. At this time, he had already created two major works, with great influence of Greco-Roman: Bacchus and Pietà. Upon returning to the city of Florence in 1501, he created two other important works: David and the painting of the Holy Family. In 1503 the artist received a further call from Rome. The Pope Julio II asked him to make the papal tomb, but the statue of Moses made by Michelangelo for the grave was completed only after the death of the Pope. Between the years of 1508 and 1512, he painted the ceiling frescoes of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican, and, therefore, was commissioned by the Pope Leão X. During this period he also worked on the reconstruction of the interior of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florença. Michelangelo projected another building attached to the Basilica, the “Laurentian Library”, to receive the collection bequeathed by the Pope Leo X after his death. The framework is remarkable for its free interpretation of the classical architectural canons, by making it one of the first and most important examples of the Manneirist architecture. Pietà, 1550 Museo dell'Opera del Duomo di Firenze
In 1534 Michelangelo left the city of Florence, called by the new Pope Paul III, to reside in Rome, although he always fed hope to go back and finish his unfinished projects. In his last phase Michelangelo laid aside sculpture and turned to architecture, poetry and painting. Between 1534 and 1541, he worked on the painting "The Last Judgment", on the altar of the Sistine Chapel. The composition was another masterpiece, but in a style entirely different from the ceiling and it reflects the impact of the Counter-Reformation culture of the time. His last paintings also worthy of note were two frescoes in the Pauline Chapel of the Vatican: “Conversion of Saul” and “Crucifixion of Peter”. In 1536 he sketched the remodeling of the Capitol Square, one of the most remarkable urban projects of the city, and, in 1547, in his condition of the new architect of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, Michelangelo drew up the plans for the reform of its structure. In 1563 Michelangelo was elected as “princeps inter pares” of the “Accademia del Disegno” of Florence. He died on February 18, 1564, at 89 years of age, in the city of Rome. Pietà Rondanini, 1564 Castello Sforzesco, Milão A última obra de Michelangelo Most of Michelangelo drawings that survive are preparatory sketches for his works in sculpture and painting. Nevertheless, they possess qualities that make them works of art themselves, and demonstrate a consummate skill in the management of form, on the effects of light and on the description of anatomy and movement. Most of them, about two hundred, is preserved in the “Casa Buonarroti”, in Florence, as a legacy from his descendants.
