Dirty word #5 – SIN There’s No “Mistaking” It

SIN

SIN IS A TRANGRESSION (AND HERE IT IS) OF DIVINE LAW. Any act regarded as such a transgression especially a willful or deliberate violation.

A mistake (you gotta love this) is an error in action, calculation, opinion or judgment (and check this out) caused by poor reasoning.

“Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. ” Matthew 5: 17

So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matthew 5: 19) “I’m not lowering the standard

For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5: 20

To the average person that is

It’s worse than you thought! Specific examples: “You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment. ’ (v 21) But I say, if you are even angry with someone you are subject to judgment! (V 22 a)

“You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery. (V 27) But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (V 28)

“You have heard the law that says, ‘A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a written notice of divorce. ’ (V 31) But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery. (V 32)

You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! (vs. 43 & 44)

, if that’s what it takes to be righteous… there’s nobody righteous but God!

Here’s the deal. Throughout Jesus’ ministry, the folks that were convinced they fell into this category flocked to hear Jesus! The loved to be with Him because He had 2 messages: 1. You’re a sinner; you’re in trouble. 2. God loves sinners and has sent you a Savior.

Here’s the message: Until you understand that you’re a sinner, you can’t marvel at the fact that God sent you Savior. Mistakers just try harder It’s worse, you’re worse than you thought The standards are higher than you thought Nobody’s getting there on their own merit

WHAT IF… John 8 I’m not going to dumb it down for you to make you feel better. I’m just not going to condemn you for it, because now that you know you’re a sinner, you’re a candidate to meet your Savior.

THE MORAL OF THE STORY The sooner you and I embrace our sinfulness, the sooner you and I are candidates for God’s grace.

“Brothers, what shall we do? ” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ” (Acts 2: 37 b-38)
