Patrol w Definition: A detachment sent out from a larger unit to perform an assigned mission of gathering information, carrying out a harassing or destructive combat mission or a security mission. 10/27/2020 ICS 1101 3

Reconnaissance patrols w gather information about the enemy, terrain or resources. Relying on stealth rather than combat strength, they gather information and fight only when necessary to complete the mission or to defend themselves. 10/27/2020 ICS 1101 6
Route reconnaissance w a directed effort to obtain detailed information of a specified route and all terrain from which the enemy could influence movement along that route. 10/27/2020 ICS 1101 7
Area Reconnaissance w a directed effort to obtain detailed information concerning the terrain or enemy activity within a prescribed area such as a town, ridgeline, woods or other features critical to operations. 10/27/2020 ICS 1101 8
Zone Reconnaissance w a directed effort to obtain detailed information concerning all routes, obstacles (to include chemical or radiological contamination), terrain, and enemy forces within a zone defined by boundaries. 10/27/2020 ICS 1101 9
Combat Patrols w This is a fighting patrol that is assigned a mission that may require it to engage the enemy. w a combat patrol is stronger and more heavily armed then a reconnaissance patrol. w A combat patrol is assigned the mission to destroy enemy troops, equipment, or installations; capture enemy documents, equipment, or installations; and as a secondary responsibility, gather information. 10/27/2020 ICS 1101 10
Urban Patrol w A vast majority of urban patrols are overt in nature; the patrols presence is readily apparent to the local populace. The majority of urban patrols are security patrols. 10/27/2020 ICS 1101 11
Security patrols w assigned missions that may or may not require them to engage the enemy. w They are used in proximity to defensive positions, on the flanks of advancing units or in rear areas. w Purposes of security patrols are to detect infiltration by the enemy, destroy infiltrators, and protect against surprise and ambush. 10/27/2020 ICS 1101 12
Contact Patrol w establishes and maintains contact to the front, flanks, or rear of either a friendly or enemy force. 10/27/2020 ICS 1101 13
Ambush Patrol w An ambush is a surprise attack from a concealed position upon a moving or temporarily halted target. 10/27/2020 ICS 1101 14
Raid Patrol w a patrol that executes a limited objective, surprise attack on an enemy force or installation and then conducts a planned withdrawal after accomplishing its mission. 10/27/2020 ICS 1101 15
