Electron Configuration… Where do the electrons all go?
We know the electrons are OUTSIDE the nucleus. They are constantly moving about the nucleus. They are positioned on different layers or shells or energy levels.
The shells get bigger as you move away from the nucleus. The first shell can ONLY hold TWO electrons. Then it is FULL. Hydrogen (_____) has one electron on this shell, Helium (____) has 2 electrons.
Every element that follows has TWO electrons on the first shell. With Lithium (____), it has _____ electrons. Two on the first shell and the third goes _____________________.
When one layer fills up, the champagne/ electrons move to the next layer. CHA This is to help explain how electrons fill each shell…. Like the champagne fills the glasses. MPA TOW NGE ER NO need to write these notes…
As we move through the elements of the Periodic Table, we add ONE electron each time. The second and third layers can both hold up to EIGHT electrons. Aluminium is number 13, so it has _____ electrons. ______, _______ (= _____) Draw this
FOR THE FIRST 20 ELEMENTS… The electron configuration is simply: FIRST LAYER _____ SECOND LAYER _____ THIRD LAYER _____ FOURTH LAYER _____ 2, 8, 8, 2
Draw the electron configuration diagram for MAGNESIUM. Magnesium Symbol = _______ Atom No. ______ No. Electrons? _____ Elec. config? _____
Draw the electron configuration diagram for MAGNESIUM. Magnesium Symbol = __Mg___ Atom No. __13__ No. Electrons? _13__ Elec. config? __2, 8, 3__
SO what? If the outer shells are ‘FULL’ (either 2 or 8), the element is STABLE. Some examples are __________________________. If the electrons are close to ‘stable’ (1 or 7 electrons), the elements are highly unstable. 1 electron examples? _____________ 7 electrons examples? _____________
