Objective of PFT Training n Test Site Coordinators (TSC) and Test Examiners: n will be knowledgeable of state and district policies regarding the PFT in order to ensure proper administration and scoring of the assessments 1
Test Site Coordinator Responsibilities n Attend training n Train test examiners n Receive Fitnessgram Kits (includes manual) n Ensure that every grade 5, 7, and 9 student is tested n Coordinate the testing of students not enrolled in a PE class n Ensure all test results are entered in the FG 9 2

The Fitnessgram® n Is designated as the Physical Fitness Test n Students are assessed in six fitness areas: n n n Aerobic Capacity Body Composition Abdominal Strength Trunk Extension Strength Upper Body Strength Overall Flexibility n Scored using criterion-referenced standards 5
Testing Window n Testing Window: n Monday, March 14 to Friday, March 25 n Make-ups: n Monday, March 28 to Friday, April 1 n Scores in FG 9 by: n Friday, April 1 n Conditioning Window: n Monday, January 24 to Friday, March 11 6
Who to Test? n All grade 5, 7, and 9 students, including: n Students not enrolled in P. E. class n Students on a block schedule n No opt-out provision n Students with medical issues are to be given as much of the test as conditions permit n IEP determines how Students with Disabilities (SWDs) will participate 7
Healthy Fitness Zones (HFZ) n Revised standards reflect levels of fitness and body composition that provide protection against health risks associated with obesity or inadequate fitness n Use of Common Health Indicator: n Metabolic Syndrome is a group of risk factors that collectively promote the development of cardiovascular disease and increases the risk of diabetes: n high fasting glucose high waist circumference high triglycerides low high density lipoprotein cholesterol and n high blood pressure n n n 8
Healthy Fitness Zones (HFZ) n Performance goal for all test areas is the HFZ n Age and gender specific n Aerobic Capacity factors in Body Composition n Needs Improvement (NI) Standards n Some Risk – potential for future health risks is possible n High Risk – potential for future health risks is probable n Very Lean Standard n May not be best for health. Factors responsible should be considered – naturally lean or inappropriate nutrition? n Upper limits of the HFZ range were removed 9
Partially Tested Students n Untested fitness area(s) are counted as not being in the HFZ n The California Department of Education (CDE) reports PFT data as “% In HFZ” and “% Not In HFZ” 10

Additional Assessment Info n Do not use skin calipers to determine body composition n Liability issue n Inaccurate unless properly trained n Elementary schools should use the PACER n More positive experience for the students n Accurately measured course issue is avoided 13
New Aerobic Capacity Standards n Use of VO 2 max values n VO 2 max - maximum capacity of an individual’s body to transport and use oxygen during incremental exercise n Calculated using PACER laps or mile-run time and BMI n No change in administration, but students can no longer pre-determine PACER laps or mile run needed n Lookup Tables for estimates: n http: //www. cooperinstitute. org/ourkidshealth/fitnessgram/hfz-tables. cfm 14

Cadences CD n Cadences CD is included with the Fitnessgram Manual and contains: n PACER 15 -Meter Test with music (track 1) n PACER 20 -Meter Test with music (track 2) n Curl-Up Cadence (track 3) n Push-Up Cadence (track 4) 16
Important Assessment Information n Aerobic Capacity: n Mile Run must be below 13: 00 for VO 2 max to be calculated n Trunk Lift: n Limit to 12” to discourage hyperextension n Sit and Reach: n Limit to 12” to discourage hypermobility 17

FG 9 Software n Save your work! n Click “Save” to register changes n Blanks vs. Zeros n A zero indicates a test was attempted and the student scored a zero n A blank indicates a test was not administered n Mile Run: n Enter 59: 59 for students who attempt, but do not finish n 15 -Meter PACER: n No need to convert to 20 -Meter laps anymore 22
PFT Student Results n Students Results: n Two Copies: Student copy in the cumulative folder n Parent copy for the student to take home n n Aggregate Results: n posted on Data. Quest the following November n High Schools: n Use the results to plan Master Schedule 23
