Background of Problem In learning English, some skills divided into 4 such as Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. Some students agree that speaking is the most difficult skills to learn. But, there are some students also state that writing is difficult too than the other skills. They said that the problems when they write something are they lack of vocabulary, the word order, how to get the ideas, and they do not know how to be consistent about the topic in their paper eventhough they have been given the topic from their teacher.

Identification of Problem There are some problems related to teaching and learning process in classroom such as: 1. Does the students’ vocabulary mastery can affect their writing skills? 2. Does the students’ knowledge about word order can affect their writing skills? 3. Does the students’ confident in get the ideas can affect their writing skills? 4. Does the octopus strategy in learning activities can affect their writing skills?

Limitation of Problem The reason why the writer choose octopus strategy as a technique because the writer hope this strategy can make students more interested in learning activities and it can makes they can handle about their problem in writing skills. 1. The writers will focus on the effect of students free writing skills using octopus strategy. 2. The writers will focus on the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 18 Kabupaten Tangerang.

Formulation of Problem “Is there any significant effect in students writing skills between student who are taught by octopus strategy and those are not taught by using octopus strategy on the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 18 Kabupaten Tangerang? ”

Objective of Research The objective of this research is “To find that there is a significant effect in writing skills with eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 18 Kabupaten Tangerang who are taught by using the octopus strategy and who do not using the octopus strategy”

Conceptual Framework Teaching writing is one of the important skills in learning English. The students need to know how to put the ideas into the written form too, not only in speaking and reading. Without the knowledge of writing, it is impossible that they can know how to word orders or how to make a good sentences. Octopus strategy appears as one of the new strategies that can hope to offering some new varieties in teaching and learning especially in English. It hopes that octopus strategy give the students opportunity to improve their writing skills, to share their ideas in written form and to make them more creative.

Research Hypotheses Pre-test Hypotheses Ho : There is no significant effect in student’s free writing skills between student’s in control class and experimental class. H 1 : There is significant effect in student’s free writing skills between student’s in control class and experimental class. Post-test Hypotheses Ho : There is no significant effect in student’s free writing skills between student’s who are taught by using the octopus strategy and who does not using the octopus strategy. H 1 : There is significant effect in student’s free writing skills between student’s who are taught by using octopus strategy and who does not using the octopus strategy.

Population Sample The population of this research are 281 students. That totally number include all of the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 18 Kabupaten Tangerang. The sample of this research are 70 students, which divided into two classes, namely class XI IPS 1 and class XI IPS 2.

Dependent Variable Instrument Conceptual Definition This research will focus on student’s free writing skills. The writer will do some treatment in the different class, experimental class and control class. Operational Definition The writer will do some treatments while taking the data. The writer will give a test which divided into two (pre-test and post-test) to the students. Instrument Based on Syllabus, and Bloom Taxonomy Validity and Reliability from Sugiyono (2016)

Independent Variable Instrument Conceptual Definition Operational Definition The writer will applied the strategy to improve students free writing skills in SMA Negeri 18 Kabupaten Tangerang. The strategy that will applied is Octopus Strategy. The writer will do some treatment in experimental class to measure or to know how if the learning process are different than before.
