Limerick: A limerick is a short form of poetry known for its humour. A

Limerick: A limerick is a short form of poetry known for its humour. A limerick should: be five lines long. Lines 1, 2 and 5 should rhyme. Lines 3 and 4 should rhyme. Here is an example: A Clumsy Young Fellow Named Tim There once was a fellow named Tim (A) whose Dad never taught him to swim. (A) He fell off a dock (B) and sunk like a rock. (B) And that was the end of him. (A) There are two types of rhythm in this sort of poetry: (A) and (B). Lines 1, 2, and 5 share the (A) rhythm. Lines 3 and 4 share the (B) rhythm Here is another example: A Frightened Girl Named Jill 1. There once was a young girl named Jill. 2. Who was scared by the sight of a drill. 3. She brushed every day 4. Acrostic Poetry In an acrostic poem the letters of the subject are written down (vertically) to form the word of choice. Next to each letter the poetic statement is written horizontally to express the subject in creative ways. Example: Garbage Grounds (coffee) Apple (core) Rinds (melon) Banana (peel) Anchovies (from a pizza I wouldn’t eat) Grapes (too ripe to eat) Emptying the stinking bag (my job) By Bruce Lansky Now it’s your turn to write your own acrostic poem.
