S. Work. The Summer Learning and More (SLAM!) is to provide appropriate skill development in core subject areas and enrichment opportunities, resulting in an increase in student achievement and an increase in promotion and graduation rates 4

Summer 2010 Youth Opportunities School District of Philadelphia Summer Learning and More (SLAM!) • The School District of Philadelphia’s Summer Learning and More will offer academic and enrichment opportunities to over 50, 000 students in the public school system • Students who are not making progress or students at schools which are not making progress, are invited to attend SLAM!, which will run from Tuesday, June 29 to Wednesday, July 28, 8 am-2: 30 pm • Students who attend will receive a full day of academic and enrichment instruction designed to help them get back on track and ready for the next grade 5

Summer 2010 Youth Opportunities School District of Philadelphia Who is Eligible for SLAM!? • 8 th GRADERS (“Rising 9 th Graders”) – All current 8 th graders, regardless of academic standing, are urged to attend their nearest Empowerment high school for programming that will focus on how to succeed in high school, and opportunities for credit recovery, if needed • HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS – All high school students, regardless of academic standing, are urged to attend one of the 29 Empowerment high schools for credit recovery and advancement 7

Summer 2010 Youth Opportunities School District of Philadelphia Summer 2010 Programs • Summer Academy (107 Schools) – High Needs schools (Empowerment, Renaissance Eligible and Renaissance Alert Schools) • Summer Program (10 Schools) – Non-High Needs schools (Non-Empowerment and Vanguard Schools) – 3, 400 teachers, student/teacher ratio is 20: 1 SLAM! Attendance Policy Every Child in Every Class Every Day on Time Absences in excess of two (2) days will result in student attendance being counted solely for enrichment, and not credit recovery, or promotion purposes 8

Summer 2010 Youth Opportunities Department of Human Services OST Summer 2010 High School Programs will operate as part of SLAM! via PYN’s Work. Ready program beginning July 6 (1, 194 youth) Middle and Elementary OST programs at Empowerment Schools will be integrating services in Summer Academies and Freedom Schools and offering aftercare until 5: 00 pm, June 29 – July 29, 8: 00 am – 2: 30 pm and then, full-day summer camps through to August 13 (2, 940 slots) Remaining Middle and Elementary OST programs not at Empowerment Schools will be offering full-day summer camps, July 6 – August 13 (6, 860 slots) 21

Works! seeks to empower young people to share their stories and expand their skill set through a multi-media applied learning model incorporating innovative and socially-conscious programs and projects; serves at-risk and truant youth Big Picture is a year-long art education and mural training program that welcomes youth artists of all ability levels and seeks to expose youth to various media and arts experiences; meets twice a week during after school hours and five days a week in the summer; serves youth ages 10 -14 Mural Corps is a year-long art education program that engages high school youth in the mural-making process; provides critical job skills and increasing educational opportunities while cultivating virtuosity in the fine arts; provides stipends during the school year, part time employment during the summer, and opportunities for scholarships and pre-college art programs; meets twice a week during the school year and five days a week in the summer; serves youth ages 15 -21 29
