Definitions o Motion – movement as a result of some force o Force – A push or pull applied to an object o Work – The application of force to cause an object to move in the direction of the force

Definitions continued: o Load – An external force on an object o Effort – The force that you apply to the machine to move the load or overcome a resistance o Potential Energy – Energy at rest. o Kinetic Energy – Energy in motion.

Lever – parts of a lever o Fulcrum – the point around which a lever turns or pivots o Effort o Load *There are three classes of levers

Class one Lever o The fulcrum is between the effort and the load. o Examples n n n See-saw Hammer’s Claw Scissors Nail Clippers Pliers Effort Load Fulcrum

Class Two Lever o The fulcrum is at one end, and the effort is at the other. The load falls in between them. o Examples: n n Stapler Bottle Opener Wheelbarrow Nut Cracker Effort Load Fulcrum

Class Three Lever o The fulcrum is at one end on top the effort is next to the fulcrum and the load is on the end. o Examples n Fishing pole n Your arm n Hockey Stick Effort Fulcrum Load

Wheel and Axle o A wheel attached to a smaller wheel or shaft to increase force or speed n Example: o Bicycle wheel o Grindstone o Steering wheel o Gears

Inclined Plane o A plane set at an angle to a horizontal surface forming a ramp. n Example: o Ramp o A Roller coaster o Stairs
