Les questions informelles (aussi appelées « familières » ) • Words in the same order as in a statement • Question word usually at the end… but not necessarily. • In yes/no questions, only the intonation or the question mark make the difference. • Comment tu t’appelles ? / Tu t’appelles comment ? • Je peux prendre vos coordonnées ?

Les questions formelles • Personal pronoun (subject) placed after the verb. • Où travaillez-vous ? • A hyphen (-) is used between the verb and the pronoun. • Avec qui menez-vous vos affaires ? • An extra « t » may be used between two vowels • Où avez-vous fait vos études ? • Aimez-vous votre profession ? • A-t-il des enfants ?

Les questions formelles • When the subject is not a pronoun, an extra, redundant pronoun is inserted after the verb ! • Paula vient-elle du Brésil ou du Maroc ? • Le président parle-t-il anglais ?

Les questions standard (aussi appelées « neutres » ) • « Est-ce que » is used as a mark of questioning. It cannot be translated! • « Est-ce que » comes first in the sentence. • « Est-ce que » can be used on its own (in a yes/no question), or in combination with another question word. • Est-ce que tu travailles en ce moment ? • Où est-ce que vous travaillez ?

Les questions standard Special case 1: Quel • With « Quel » (and all its forms), « est-ce que » comes after the noun ! • « Est-ce que » cannot be used with « Quel est » ! • Quel animal est-ce que vous préférez ? • Quelles pizzas est-ce que vous voulez commander ? • Quel est votre animal préféré ?

Les questions standard Special case 2: Quoi (what) • The question word « quoi » has two forms : « quoi » and « que » . Examples in formal questions: • « Quoi » is used on its own, after a preposition or at the end of a sentence. • C’est quoi ? • « Que » is used in first position in a sentence, and never on its own. • Tu veux quoi ? • Avec quoi tu travailles ? • Que fais-tu le week-end ?

Les questions standard Special case 2: Quoi (what) Examples in standard questions: • « Que » + « Est-ce que » = « Qu’est-ce que » • Qu’est-ce que tu veux ? • Qu’est-ce que c’est ? • Qu’est-ce que tu fais le weekend ? • BUT : Avec quoi est-ce que tu travailles ?

Attention ! • Est-ce que = yes/no? • Qu’est-ce que = What?
