Listening Exercise. • This music is being played by the military in England. Snare drums in particular have been used for century to help soldiers march in time, row in time, and also to signal when to charge at the enemy and when to retreat. In the Napoleonic wars children a young as 8 where the first to enter the battle fields banging their drums for the soldiers to march in time. It was a highly dangerous profession! These days the military perform music for shows but they still keep the patterns used for centuries for marching, charging and retreating.

This is the treble clef symbol and it tells a musician that the notes are going to be played on instruments which make the higher pitches. This is the musical stave. It has 5 lines with 4 spaces in between. Each of the lines and spaces is a different musical note. There are only 7 main musical notes: A B C D E F G. When you get to G they start again but this time the notes are higher in pitch.
