Getting Taken to the Cleaners Clothes are placed in a giant machine similar to a washing machine. Tetrachloroethylene is mixed with a very small amount of water and a special detergent. This solvent flows through the machine until the clothes are clean. The solvent remaining on the clothes evaporates and is recycled.
