KNX history ● 1984 - Increasing demands made on the flexibility and convenience of electrical installations, combined with the demand to minimize energy requirements, have led to first developments of building management systems. ● 1987 - The awareness that manufacturer specific and proprietary systems would hinder a broad market penetration guided the leading manufacturers in electrical installation techniques to the constitution of the INSTABUSresearch and development organization. ● (Founding members: Merten, Berker, Gira, Jung and Siemens) ●Target => Creating a standard that grants compatibility and interoperation of devices and systems from different manufacturers through all crafts and building applications. KNX history ● 1990 - Constitution of the EIBA (European Installation Bus Association) based in Brussels to define technical guidelines, certification and awarding of the EIB trademark, preparing of European and international standards (DIN VDE 0829 and EN 50090) and coordination of the EIBA-member activities. ● 1991 - First standardised products have been offered to the market ● 1993 - Constitution of EIBA-country groups Schneider Electric - IS&C – Aug. 2008 4

KNX history ● 1999 - Members of the following associations have founded the Konnex Association: ● Bati. BUS Club International (BCI) ● European Installation Bus Association (EIBA) ● European Home Systems Association (EHSA) ●Objective => Promoting the newly defined “one-single-standard” for field bus applications in homes and buildings. This standard, called KNX, is based on the well-established technology of EIB and enlarged with the configuration mechanisms and physical media from Bati. BUS and EHS. KNX history ●Today => KNX-offer consists of more than 6000 product groups with a multiple on KNX-certified products from more than 130 registered manufacturers. ● Nowadays KNX is the first open world-standard for home and building automation meeting European and International standards. ● Europe: CENELEC EN 50090 + CEN EN 13321 ● International: ISO/IEC 14543 + GB/Z 20965 Chinese Standard + ANSI/ASHRAE 135 US Standard Schneider Electric - IS&C – Aug. 2008 6

KNX association ● 134 KNX members ● You can apply for KNX membership if your company is a manufacturer, service provider or interested party and is interested in: ● Using the KNX technology in your product development. ● KNX certified products and having access to the technical development support line. ● Furthering the KNX technology by having the possibility to participate actively in the KNX technical working groups. ● Profiting from the common communication around KNX as worked out in the KNX marketing groups (active participation also possible). KNX association ● 20 National KNX Groups ● 14 in the European Community, others in Europe, Middle and Far East (incl. Russia & China) ● In new member states the establishment of such groups will be supported ● Main tasks of the groups: create awareness for the KNX technology and the standards ISO/ IEC 14543 / EN 50090 as the solution for home and building controls in their markets by promoting the use of the KNX standard in: ●products of local manufacturers ●the use of KNX solutions by local (electrical) contractors and planners in local projects, according to national practice ●local training institutes to take over KNX into their respective training programs ● KNX Association provides information material (brochures, press releases, . . . ) in the local language and takes part in national fairs Schneider Electric - IS&C – Aug. 2008 11

KNX association ● 50 KNX training centres ● To grant a qualified training of prospective KNX partners minimum requirements have to be fulfilled to become registered as a certified training centre: ● Media equipment ● Training equipment incl. devices and components shall be available to realize the following functions : ● Switching ● Dimming ● Shutter Control ● Coupling of two TP 1 lines ● For tutor aptitude: At least one (internal or external) tutor shall be in the possession of a tutor certificate. ● Certified training centres will be put in an international database that can be consulted via the KNX web pages. KNX association ● 4 accredited test laboratories ● Test labs location: DIAL (DE), Siemens (DE), LCIE (FR), IMQ (Italy) ● The KNX/EIB certification guarantees a high level of product quality and interoperability ● Manufacturer independent certification and interworking tests mainly on new applications and communication media ● For SW testing, KNX accredited test labs are authorised to carry out third party KNX system and interworking testing. For HW testing, use testing facilities at own premises or take assign a KNX test laboratory. Emphasis is put on testing of uncertified parts only. ● A uniform test tool enables the manufacturer to prepare much of the software test campaign at own premises and provides this preparation as input for third party testing. ● When KNX certification dep. has received all test report, system & interworking conformity together with the CE declaration for the HW, a certificate is issued for use of the trademark on the tested product ● On registration and certification the entry of the product data in the central database of the ETS follows Schneider Electric - IS&C – Aug. 2008 17
