KNX history ● 1984 - Increasing demands made on the flexibility and convenience of electrical installations, combined with the demand to minimize energy requirements, have led to first developments of building management systems. ● 1987 - The awareness that manufacturer specific and proprietary systems would hinder a broad market penetration guided the leading manufacturers in electrical installation techniques to the constitution of the INSTABUSresearch and development organization. ● (Founding members: Merten, Berker, Gira, Jung and Siemens) ●Target => Creating a standard that grants compatibility and interoperation of devices and systems from different manufacturers through all crafts and building applications. BUS Club International (BCI) ● European Installation Bus Association (EIBA) ● European Home Systems Association (EHSA) ●Objective => Promoting the newly defined “one-single-standard” for field bus applications in homes and buildings. This standard, called KNX, is based on the well-established technology of EIB and enlarged with the configuration mechanisms and physical media from Bati. BUS and EHS. KNX association ● 50 KNX training centres ● To grant a qualified training of prospective KNX partners minimum requirements have to be fulfilled to become registered as a certified training centre: ● Media equipment ● Training equipment incl. devices and components shall be available to realize the following functions : ● Switching ● Dimming ● Shutter Control ● Coupling of two TP 1 lines ● For tutor aptitude: At least one (internal or external) tutor shall be in the possession of a tutor certificate. ● Certified training centres will be put in an international database that can be consulted via the KNX web pages. KNX association ● 4 accredited test laboratories ● Test labs location: DIAL (DE), Siemens (DE), LCIE (FR), IMQ (Italy) ● The KNX/EIB certification guarantees a high level of product quality and interoperability ● Manufacturer independent certification and interworking tests mainly on new applications and communication media ● For SW testing, KNX accredited test labs are authorised to carry out third party KNX system and interworking testing. For HW testing, use testing facilities at own premises or take assign a KNX test laboratory. Emphasis is put on testing of uncertified parts only. ● A uniform test tool enables the manufacturer to prepare much of the software test campaign at own premises and provides this preparation as input for third party testing. ● When KNX certification dep. has received all test report, system & interworking conformity together with the CE declaration for the HW, a certificate is issued for use of the trademark on the tested product ● On registration and certification the entry of the product data in the central database of the ETS follows Schneider Electric - IS&C – Aug. 2008 17
