H&S campaign No. 5 “Falls from vehicles”
Why are we running a campaign? Because of the high numbers and frequency of injuries attributed to: • Falls from vehicles • Falls from items of mobile plant • Slips, trips and falls on the beds of trailers
The dangers of incorrect access / egress
Highways injury stats (HE database for injuries recorded between Apr-12 and Jan-15) A total of 40 injuries, or varying severity, recorded were categorised as follows: • 65% – Stepping from vehicle / plant onto the ground or floor surface (26 no) • 15% – Accessing or exiting the cone well of TM vehicles (6 no) • 13% – Slips & trips on debris on the beds of trailers (5 no) • 8% – Other (3 no)
Highways injury stats (HE database for injuries recorded between Apr-12 and Jan-15) Timings (24 hour clock) for the 40 injuries: • 53% – Nightshift (21 no) • 35% – Dayshift (14 no) • 13% – Unknown, times not entered on database (5 no)

THE CHALLENGE To promote and encourage “buy-in” with understanding in the use and benefits of carrying out: • Simple checks on vehicles, mobile plant equipment, and the beds of trailers • Ensuring that controls are put in place, each day / shift, by users and supervisors
RAISING AWARENESS The following are example documents available here; http: //www. highwayssafetyhub. com/falls-fromvehicles. html
HSE checklists and posters Appendices: • HSE Vehicle “spec” check • HSE Managers checklist • HSE Managers poster (Help raise awareness of ways to prevent falls from vehicles) • HSE Workers poster (Help raise awareness of ways to prevent falls from vehicles) • HSE preventing falls from vehicles pocket card (INDG 413)

THE GOAL To reduce the numbers and frequency of injuries, incidents and near misses attributed to: • Falls from vehicles • Accessing & exiting the cone well (TM vehicles) • Slips, trips and falls on the beds of trailers
What we need from you… • Whilst slips, trips and falls remains a common (repeat) issue, key learning and the development of controls has progressed and understanding has improved… • THEY JUST NEED TO BE USED! 15 October 20
