Export results • Exports to the EU, which comprised 16. 2% of the total PH merchandise exports, amounted to USD 901 million in March this year, up 52% from same period last year. • For the 1 st Quarter 2017, overall exports to EU went up to USD 2. 4 billion or 48% higher than the same period last year.
Philippines-European Union FTA Negotiations
Why did we engage EU in FTA negotiations? • To lock-in GSP+ tariff preferences; secure additional market access beyond the coverage of GSP+ • PH graduation likely in 5 -7 years, as country may reach higher middle-income status (assuming 7% GDP yearly growth; 2% population growth) • Provide a conducive framework for investments • Other ASEAN member states aggressively pursuing FTA with EU
Objectives of the Negotiations • Improved market access for goods, services and investment • Promotion and facilitation of trade and investments • Enhance competitiveness • Contribute to the objectives of sustainable development
Status of the Negotiations • The 1 st round of FTA negotiations was held on 23 -27 May in Brussels, Belgium • The 2 nd round of negotiations was held last 13 -17 February 2017 in Cebu, Philippines
