DEPARTMENT OF Sociology

Welcome to Sociology at Dartmouth! Sociology examines the social relations that shape individual behavior, how we connect with one another, and how individuals and groups make meaningful social change. Our faculty teach and do research on the most pressing issues of our time, including racial justice and inequality, residential segregation, health disparities, education, work-family balance, globalization, democratization, and more.

Sociology at Dartmouth Sociology majors have flexibility to build their course of study based on what interests them. Many of our courses involve a strong experiential component, including hands-on work with local organizations in NH and VT & opportunities for independent research. Sociology also offers separate minors in Markets, Management, and the Economy & Social Inequalities

Sociology at Dartmouth Students work one-on-one with faculty members, receive training in qualitative and quantitative research methods, and conduct original high-quality research of their own. Sociology at Dartmouth What can you do with a sociology degree? Recent alumni have gone on to: Private Sector Occupations in Communications/Public Relations, Consulting, and Marketing. Non-Profit Organizing and Management. Med School, Law School, and Ph. D programs.

Sociology at Dartmouth Good Courses for First-Year Students this Fall: SOCY 1 Introductory Sociology SOCY 20 Sex, Death, and Migration SOCY 27 Organizations in Society SOCY 35 Sociology of Mental Health SOCY 48 Immigration, Race, and Ethnicity Consider taking a statistics class this year.
