Giovanni Paolo Pannini, pintor e arquiteto italiano, nasceu em Piacenza, em 17 de junho de 1691. Quando jovem, Pannini foi aprendiz de cenógrafo em Piacenza. Em 1711, mudou-se para Roma, onde estudou desenho com Benedetto Luti e ficou famoso como decorador de palácios, incluindo o “Villa Patrizia” e o “Palazzo De Carolis”. Como pintor e excelente desenhista ficou conhecido por suas “vedute”, ou seja, desenhos ou pinturas de vistas célebres ou muito admiradas, de cidades ou paisagens. Em 1719, foi admitido na “Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon”, que é a congregação dos pintores papais. Ensinou em Roma, na “Accademia di San Luca”, a guilda dos pintores, e na “Académie de France”. Especializou-se em edificações ou ruínas romanas e seus desenhos foram a base para muitas restaurações. Seu estilo influenciou vários pintores como Fragonard, Canaletto e Bernardo Bellotto. Pannini destacou-se como pintor não só por ser o primeiro artista italiano a retratar as ruínas romanas, mas também porque ele sabia combinar o estilo renascentista com as novas tendências que vinham da França. Morreu em Roma, em 21 de outubro de 1765.

Biography: Italian painter and architect, Giovanni Paolo Pannini was born in Piacenza on June 17, 1691. As a young man, Pannini was an apprentice designer in Piacenza. In 1711, he moved to Rome, where he studied drawing with Benedetto Luti and became famous as a decorator of palaces, including the “Villa Patrizia” and the “Palazzo De Carolis”. Pannini was excellent as a painter as a designer, and was best known for his "vedute", i. e. drawings or paintings of famous and widely admired views of cities or landscapes. In 1719, he joined the “Congregation dei Virtuosi al Pantheon”, which is the congregation of the papal painters. He taught in Rome at the “Accademia di San Luca”, the guild of painters, and in the “Académie de France”. He specialized in Roman ruins or buildings and their drawings were the basis for many restorations. His style influenced many artists such as Fragonard, Canaletto and Bernardo Bellotto. Pannini stood out as a painter not only for being the first Italian artist who portrayed the Roman ruins, but also because he knew how to combine the Renaissance style with the new trends coming from France.
