Here you learn how to integrate your knowledge into practice. You will receive valuable information and develop social work skills as you work alongside a professional social worker and other staff in your placement. You will be notified to complete an application in the IPT database (http: //www. alceasoftware. com/alcea/index. html). After completing your application you will be contacted by email with additional directions regarding your application and additional forms to complete. You will be contacted to schedule a face-to-face interview with a School of Social Work Field Faculty. At the interview, the Field Faculty will discuss placement issues and the placment process. The field faculty will make a referral to the agency. You will schedule and attend your interview at your placement.

What Level Are You? Foundation Students • First year MSW students enter the MSW

What Level Are You? Foundation Students • First year MSW students enter the MSW program with little to no course work in social work and do not qualify for the Advanced Standing Program. • Full time students will complete their degree requirements in two years, completing their internship each year that they are in the program. • Part time students will complete their degree requirements in four years completing their internship in the second and fourth year. • Students must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. • This placement is not considered a clinical placement.

Concentration and Advanced Standing Students • Students have completed the Foundation year courses or have been accepted into the advanced standing program. • Part time students will complete this internship in their fourth year. • Full time students will complete this internship in their second year. • Advanced Standing students have completed a BSW within the last five years and have a gpa above 3. 5. The Foundation year is waived for advanced standing students. If accepted they are allowed to enter the MSW program at the Concentration level. • This placement is considered a clinical placement.

Starting Early • You may not start your field prior to the first day of field as noted in the previous slides, except in very rare circumstances (ie. , mandatory agency orientation) • Any request to start field prior to the first day of the semester must be sent via email to the Coordinator of Field Education Dr. Arlene Kaplan (afkaplan@fau. edu) and written permission must be granted by the Coordinator prior to the requested start date • If permission is granted to start early, the extra hours must be adjusted during the semester as students can not end field early, carry field hours from one semester to the next or take vacation during field • No field hours will be counted prior to the beginning of the semester without written permission from the Coordinator of Field Education 11

Extended Concentration & Financial Aid Requirements $ Those students who are working and need

Extended Concentration & Financial Aid Requirements $ Those students who are working and need to do their field placement for fewer hours per week will be allowed to spread their placement out over three semesters. $ Students who do the extended option will receive an “I” at the end of the summer semester and will not register again for field for the fall semester. $ The Office of Financial aid requires that part-time students who are on financial aid must be registered for at least 6 credits each semester. $ Therefore , part-time students on financial aid who choose the extended option will be required in the fall to take and pay for an extra 3 credit course in order to qualify for financial aid. Students have the option of enrolling in an additional social work elective or any three credit course in the university. Independent studies by faculty from the School of Social Work will not be approved. $ The extended concentration placement is optional. If you are a part-time student and can not afford the additional 3 credits, you will need to enter field in the fall semester. 15

Mandatory Day Time Hours Required for Field • In order to provide a quality educational experience, and ensure you receive proper supervision, you must free up at least 8 daytime hours each week (i. e. , 8 AM – 5 PM) Monday through Friday to do your placement. • The 8 hours can be done all in one day or broken up between two 4 hour days. • This is required of all students regardless whether you are full time or part time, and foundation or concentration level. 16

MSW Foundation Seminar Class Ø The seminar course will meet the first time on

MSW Foundation Seminar Class Ø The seminar course will meet the first time on August 25, 2015, and will continue to meet for the next three weeks of the Fall semester and then meet every other week for the rest of the Fall semester. The schedule for the Spring semester will be provided later in the Fall semester. Changes to the schedule may occur as needed. Ø The classes will meet each time for 3 hours. 18

MSW Concentration Seminar Class Ø MSW Concentration students starting in the fall – you will receive an email through your FAU email account prior to the start of the semester with the dates/times the seminar will be held. The first seminar meeting will be held on August 24, 2015. Ø MSW Extended students starting in the summer – you will be notified via your FAU email when the 3 -hour seminar course will meet for the summer 3 seminar. You will join the regular field seminar in the fall and spring semesters. 19

MSW Field Seminar Course ü Attendance is required at all of the field seminars ü It is mandatory to attend the first seminar of the semester as this is when many details of your field experience will be explained including, but not limited to expectations, assignments, hours, forms, Blackboard, etc. ü Failure to attend seminars may result in additional assignments and/or termination from the course. 20

Field Application Process Malpractice/Liability Insurance Ë Student liability insurance in the amount of $1, 000/$3, 000 will be purchased on your behalf by the School of Social Work and will be covered by tuition/clinical lab fees that you pay. Ë The liability insurance only covers your action while you are a student at your field placement and does not cover you for any other activities or jobs. Ë Always identify yourself as a student to reduce liability when working in the field 22

You will be contacted via email confirming that your field application has been accepted. You will also be told which field faculty member will interview you. 3. A field faculty member or representative will call you within 10 working days to schedule your interview. 4. You must bring an updated resume and the required four field forms with you when you have your individual interview with the Field Faculty. You will not be referred to an agency until you have submitted the resume and forms to the Field Faculty. 23

Field Application Process (Disclosure) • You will need to discuss with the designated FAU Field Faculty if there have been any current or past situations in your life that may impact where you should be placed (i. e. , being in recovery, being the victim of domestic violence, having a terminally ill relative, etc). • Students need to self disclose if any agency may represent a conflict of interest situation for the student, the student’s family or significant others (i. e. , you or a family member being a client of an agency currently or in the past, working at an agency in the past, donating large sums of money to the agency, family connections at agency, etc). 24

Dont delay or you may lose your placement ü You may have to drive to an agency outside your immediate community to achieve the best educational opportunity 25
