Development of Social Work Education in Pakistan

• First social work education programme • The first social work education programme in Pakistan was started by the UN Technical Assistance and Government of Pakistan in Karachi in 1952. • It was a short-term in-service training course with the objectives of strengthening skills and discovering leaders and teachers for developing social work education. • The second training programme was started in Dhaka in 1953. • Similar other training programme was started in Dhaka in 1953. • Several other training courses were also organized from time to time. • These were intended to identify the welfare needs and to determine the appropriate type of training.

• Two-year Diploma of Social Work • In 1954, a two-year Diploma of Social Work Course was introduced in the Punjab University, and • from 1957 the Department of Social Work in the same university started a two-year course leading to a M. A. Degree in Social Work.

 • Similarly, the University of Karachi and the university of Sindh also started

• Similarly, the University of Karachi and the university of Sindh also started courses in Social Work in 1961 and 1967 respectively. • The Universities of Baluchistan and Peshawar were last to introduce Social Work Courses at the Post-Graduate level. • Besides, Social Work was introduced in several colleges as an elective subject in the B. A. (pass) Course in 1961.

• Through an agreement between the Government of Pakistan and the UNICEF, two Child Welfare Training Centres, one at Lahore and the other in Karachi; were established to train personnel of voluntary agencies in 1963 and 1967 respectively. • The latter has been re-named as Social Welfare Training Institute and is providing in-service training in workers of both voluntary agencies and the Directorate of Social Welfare. • Similar training institutes should be established in the Province of Baluchistan and N. W. F. P. In 1988, the Federal Ministry of Special Education and Social Welfare has upgraded its training centre into National Training Institute of Social Welfare for higher level and longer duration extensive training courses for social workers belonging to public and private sectors.
