Grading and Professional Judgement: “For some students and some purposes, a grade based on a statistical algorithm may be fair and accurate. But rigidly applying the same algorithm to determine grades for all students in all classes distorts as often as it clarifies. Some computerized grading programs allow teachers to use different statistical algorithms in different classes. But no program allows teachers to vary the algorithm used from student to student within a class. Only by relying on professional judgment based on a clearly defined purpose can teachers appropriately individualize the grading process. ” Gusky and Jung, 2016 Turn and Talk: What are your thoughts on this quote?

Grading and Professional Judgement: Table Talk: o Do you use Jupiter grades (or other grading programs) to calculate your grades? Why or why not? o If you are using Jupiter grades (or other grading programs), has it allowed you to adjust grades to your satisfaction? Why or why not?

Answers from Faculty: o If you are using Jupiter grades (or other grading programs),

Answers from Faculty: o If you are using Jupiter grades (or other grading programs), how have you adjusted grades? o Group 1: Yes, good communication. Calculates stuff for us. o Group 2: It’s user friendly, ability to stay in touch with parents, level of specificity when leaving comments. Much better than Inifinite. o Group 13: Varied in comments, mine and Erron’s most similar. My grading I go by rubric scales. Know how many 4’s, 3’s they have and they can calculate their grades. Grades are on a spreadsheet. o Group 12: Use it in different ways. From Jupiter grades straight into Infinite. o Group 15: Use it for percentage and standards based graded, group is not afraid to change grades, take a look and make sure students are on track of what they do deserve, we’re trying to adjust values of assignments based on what we think is valued

Answers from Faculty: o If you are using Jupiter grades (or other grading programs), how have you adjusted grades? o Group 16: Report grading, very useful, very precise in what to report to parents. Currently don’t know how to use calculations, using Excel o Group 14: Jupiter grades work and how it’s adjustable, but very careful you are adjusting up because parents are watching. Use comments a lot – shows how much help teacher is helping out with assignment o Group 17: Non-classroom teachers, but were thinking back when they were. Used mostly for communication. Started to be aware of other grading platforms that are being used or regular gradebook. It’s easy to change a grade – idea of adjusting a grade, a true indicator of how it is weighted. I use comments a lot for how much help student needed or how they progress o Group 11: My perspective – how I use it in classroom and as a coordinator. Doing standards based not quite – can’t do it for all kids. Mean vs. median – a lot of algorithms for different students. The best scores for the benefit of the students. Nice to hear the customizability – feel free to ask. How do weighted grades work, how do bonus points, calculations are being done because of initial set up
