Phonics Vowels include a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y. Vowel sounds can be short or long. Long vowel sounds say their name. Some words with a long vowel sound end in a silent e. Other long vowel sounds are formed by vowel teams. Sometimes vowel teams make new sounds, called diphthongs. Let’s review the diphthong spelling patterns, “oi” and “oy” by completing the Spoiled with Toys handout. Teaching Point: I can read and spell words with long vowel teams.
