Math Teaching Point: I can use place value strategies to subtract within 100. • Number Talk • Word Problem of the Day • I can use a hundred chart to subtract. • Mini-lesson: Today we will learn how to subtract on a hundred chart. We learned how to add on a hundred chart and now we will reverse it to subtract. What directions do you think the arrows will face to subtract? • Task: Use the hundred chart strategy and handout to solve the subtraction problems on the turkeys.
Reading Teaching Point: I can identify the main topic and key details in nonfiction texts. • Good readers identify the main topic and key details given to support the topic. • Mini-Lesson: We will review how to read a nonfiction passage and identify the main topic. Let’s read about Cherokee Native Americans of the past and identify the main topic of sections in the text. • Task: Read nonfiction books on your own and see if you can figure out the main topic of sections of your book.

Writing Teaching Point: I can write to inform. • Good writers write to inform. • Informational writing involves writing real facts and becoming experts on a topic. • Mini-Lesson: Today you will finish writing facts about your animal, and then you will work on organizing them as you complete the graphic organizer. • Task: Write a bold beginning, mighty middle, and excellent ending to your informational paragraph. Phonics Vowels include a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y. Vowel sounds can be short or long. Long vowel sounds say their name. Some words with a long vowel sound end in a silent e. Other long vowel sounds are formed by vowel teams. This week we will look at spelling patterns for the long “o” sound. Let’s read a passage and see if we can find all of the words with a long “o” sound. Teaching Point: I can read and spell words with long vowel teams.

Social Studies Teaching Point: I can compare and contrast a culture of the past to my life today. • Mini-Lesson: This week we will be learning about cultures of the past, the Creek and Cherokee Native Americans. Earlier in reading, we read about the lives of the Cherokee Native Americans. Let’s see if we can think of ways that our lives today are the same and different. • Task: Let’s complete the Venn diagram together.
