Emotional Intelligence The capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. Found by Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer in 1990 “a form of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and action”
MORE RESEARCH Daniel Goleman, a science writer for the New York Times, started working on EI research in the 1990 s. His argument was cognitive intelligence did not guarantee business success. Emotionally intelligent people have four characteristics: They are good at understanding their own emotions. They are good at managing their emotions. They are empathetic to the emotional drives of other people. They are good at handling other people’s emotions.
IQ “the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills. ” Ability is the key word. Also includes your collection of knowledge. Does not change from when you are born. Which is king? IQ or EI?
WHY WOULD THIS HELP YOU Humans are made to feel. Motivation is fueled by emotion. The average human experiences 27 emotions hour. We are usually awake for 17 hours a day. That is 457 emotions every day! Possessing the ability to harness the power of those emotions is crucial.

SOCIAL AWARENESS The ability to understand respond to the needs of others. The ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people, skill in treating people according to their emotional reactions (empathy) Listen. In order to listen you must stop talking. Body Language, tone, volume, speed of movement. Ask clarifying questions. Think back the emotions from Self Management.
RELATIONSHIP AWARENESS SOCIAL SKILLS Proficiency in managing relationships and building networks, an ability to find common ground and build rapport. Importance of understanding your own emotions Empathizing how their emotions effect the same situation If you are too direct about confronting their emotions, it could lead to defensiveness
