POETRY!! • What is poetry? • Why do we study poetry?
Personification Giving an object, animal, or idea human qualities
Personification The wheat waves hello as I walk by.
Personification The ocean waters whisper loving words to the sand.
Alliteration The repetition of consonant sounds, usually at the beginning of the words.
Alliteration She sells sea shells by the sea shore. What sounds are being repeated?
Alliteration Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. What sound is being repeated?
Onomatopoeia The use of words that imitate sounds.
Simile A comparison that uses like or as. It points out how two unlike things have something in common.
Simile She is as sour as lemons. What 2 things are being compared? How are they similar?
Simile He is like a snake. What 2 things are being compared? How are they alike?
Metaphor A comparison that says one thing is another, unlike thing. It does NOT use like or as.
Metaphor I am woman; hear me roar! What 2 things are being compared? How are they alike?
Metaphor The night is full of twinkling diamonds.
Simile, Metaphor, or Neither? • • • I like apples. You are the apple of my eye. Timothy is as sweet as pie. You are as slow as a snail. Your room is a pig sty. I laugh as I walk into the room.
An exaggeration that describes what is actually happening but to an unrealistic degree
Hyperbole He broke my heart into a thousand pieces.
Hyperbole I tried to call you a thousand times last night!
Repetition Words, phrases, or sounds that are repeated
Imagery • The use of language that appeals to the senses. SIGHT TASTE • Imagery can also be called Sensory Details. TOUCH SOUND SMELL
Idiom • an extreme exaggeration; does NOT describe what is literally/actually happening; is a well-known saying, so within a culture the meaning is understood. • Example: It’s raining cats and dogs. • Example: I have butterflies in my stomach.
RHYME • Rhyme is when the accented vowel sounds and all sounds following are repeated. • sport and court • dear and fear • right and might • mouse and house
