Acid rain
Outcomes Grade D Identify how acid rain is formed and describe the effects of acid rain on the environment. Grade C Explain what can be done to reduce acid rain. Grade B/A Evaluate the impact on the environment and how a change in behaviour is needed to help the environment. Literacy skills. Interpret information (comprehension of text). Good clear sentence construction. Good spelling especially of key words. Group work (discussion). Homework (consolidate).
Challenge. • What does good group work look like? • There are 4 opportunities to challenge yourselves in this lesson- I would like you to do at least one of them.
Yellow sheet keywords Carbon Dioxide Acid rain Nitrogen oxides Car Engines Volcano p. H Sulphur Dioxide Solar Panels
Which is incorrect? • Carbon + Oxygen water + carbon dioxide • Nitrogen + oxygen nitrogen dioxide • Sulphur + oxygen sulphur dioxide • Hydrocarbon + oxygen water + carbon dioxide
Which is the odd one out? p. H 2 p. H 5 p. H 6 p. H 8
? Which colour represents p. H 4? A B C D
? What does “emissions” mean? • To let gases in. • waste gases as a result of combustion. • Waste fuel. • Greenhouse gases.
? • • Which is the odd one out? Projected results Predicted results Forecasted results Average results
Write down as many things as you can about this reaction 2 minutes (fuel)
Your task: On your mini whiteboards: TASK 1 Choose 3 of the cartoons and write down what message you think they are trying to give. Pink post it 5 MINUTES Fancy a challenge? • Why do you think these cartoons were created? Do you think they are persuasive and how? Yellow post it

Where Does Acid Rain Come From?
ACID RAIN • Rain is naturally slightly acidic (contains carbon dioxide) • When water vapour is combined with certain pollution it makes the rain more acidic. Where does the sulphur dioxide come from?
EQUATIONS Sulphur dioxide and water form sulphurous acid (H 2 SO 3) SO 2(g) + H 2 O(l) --> H 2 SO 3(aq) Some oxides of nitrogen like nitrogen dioxide (NO 2) react with water to form nitrous acid (HNO 2) and nitric acid (HNO 3) 2 NO 2(g) + H 2 O(l) -> HNO 2(aq) + HNO 3(aq) Carbon dioxide in the air can dissolve in rain water to form carbonic acid, (H 2 CO 3). CO 2 + H 2 O H 2 CO 3
TASK 2 TASK 10 min
Direction of Prevailing wind.
EFFECTS When soil is contaminated, cereal (arable) production drops Acids pollute water fish die. Drinking water is contaminated Buildings and precious stone objects are weathered away as the stone reacts with the acid These trees have been killed.
Which picture is best? A B
Reducing the effect on the environment Power station can have scrubbers and flue gas desulphurisation plants Remove sulphur dioxide Catalytic converters in cars – turns nitrogen oxides in to nitrogen which is not as harmful Using alternatives to fossil fuel • Driving less cars (carshares, public transport)
TASK 3 TASK 10 min
Outcomes Grade D Identify how acid rain is formed and describe the effects of acid rain on the environment. Grade C Explain what can be done to reduce acid rain. Grade B/A Evaluate the impact on the environment and how a change in behaviour is needed to help the environment. Literacy skills. Interpret information (comprehension of text). Good clear sentence construction. Good spelling especially of key words. Group work (discussion). Homework (consolidate).
4 Task 4
Outcomes Grade D Identify how acid rain is formed and describe the effects of acid rain on the environment. Grade C Explain what can be done to reduce acid rain. Grade B/A Evaluate the impact on the environment and how a change in behaviour is needed to help the environment. Literacy skills. Interpret information (comprehension of text). Good clear sentence construction. Good spelling especially of key words. Group work (discussion). Homework (consolidate).
Outcomes • Grade D Identify the causes of acid rain and describe the damage it causes. • Grade C Explain how acid rain can be prevented. • Grade B/A Evaluate the impact on the environment and how a change in behaviour is needed to help the environment.
HOMEWORK
Wind in a NW direction The direction of the wind If black spots are present on leaves It means there is No sulphur dioxide In the air Coal power station burns coal which contains sulphur Nuclear power station Does not burn fuels that contain sulphur Coniferous trees are greatly effected by acid rain Deciduous trees are more hardy and not as effected by acid rain Other evidence
