Acid Rain ……Is rainfall with a p. H lower than 5. 6.

Fossil fuels are one of the main causes of acid rain. Fossil fuels are fuels such as oil and coal which are burned in houses and cars. These gases leave off sulphar dioxide and nitrogen which react with sunlight and condensate to form weak sulphuric and nitric acids. These fall to earth in the form of acid rain. Causes of Acid rain

Impact of burning fossil fuels – Acid Rain

Impacts of Acid Rain Acid rain can have a lot of negative effects on: (1) agriculture, (2) forestry, (3) tourism and (4) quality of life.

Acid rain dramatically increases the rate of leaching in the soil, washing all the vital nutrients and minerals. It can also damage plant roots affecting the whole crop. Agriculture

Due to this leaching trees are also malnourished and are prone to diseases and there tolerance of cold is also weakened. If the acid is very strong it will burn the leaves off the tree Many forest over europe and canada are destroyed by this acid rain. Forestry

Tourism. Fishing Acid rain can destroy fishing lakes by destroying the food chain, as well as taking oxygen from the lake.

Toursim. Buildings The front of many limestone buildings and artworks are undergo chemcial weathering. This makes the features unattractive and can be an eyesore for tourists.

Acid rain in northern european countries has been linked to diseases, foul tasting water and even bleaching peoples hair. Acid fog can affect peoples breathing with tiny drops of nitric and sulphuric being present in the air, which can result in asthma. Quality of life

One of the biggest problems with acid rain is that countries like England that produce huge amount of CO 2 emissions do not suffer from the effects of acid rain becasue the wind blows coming from the south west blow the rain towards the Scandanavian countries Accepting responsibility.

What is the message of this cartoon

Disagreement over industry

A Belgian company wants to build two large incinerators in the Cork Harbour Area. They would burn toxic, poisonous and medical waste as well as household waste. The waste would be turned to ash. There would be some air emissions. Disagreement over industry

For Incinerator Against Incinerator Burn Pollute Irelands toxic waste (60%) Give 50 permanent jobs. Generate electricity Provide spin off jons nearby areas Poison could damage local Agriculture Disrupt tourists. Waste should be reduced/ reused and recycled.
