Education Based Athletics • Extension of the Learning Environment & Classroom • This philosophy usually differs from Club, Travel, Recreation, & Youth Sports Teams. • Coaches will work to develop not just sport specific skills but also the whole STUDENT-ATHLETE. • Time Management, Adversity, Perseverance, Dedication, Teamwork, Self Advocacy among others are character traits worth developing. • While winning is nice and an admirable goal, it isn’t everything. Success is determined by the quality of citizens we develop.

Athletic Mission Statement University High School Athletics strives to provide a variety of athletic programs that aide in developing & preparing students to be positive, productive citizens in a 21 st century world.

Athletic Vision Statement Athletics will strive to create opportunities that will allow all students to grow physically, mentally, and personally; to create a caring, supportive and respectful environment for all to succeed.

Philosophy § The Volusia County School Board and University High School recognize the value of athletic participation and the values and skills that can be gained by such participation. Our interscholastic athletic program is designed to be part of the overall school curriculum and serves to aid in the education and personal development of the student-athlete. Athletics are seen as an extension or “extra” curricular part of the total educational program and should never place the academic program in a secondary role. The opportunity to participate in the athletic program should be regarded as a privilege that carries responsibilities to one’s self, his or her family, school and community. §

Junior Varsity We will field as many JV teams as participation and local competition will allow. Our goal is to provide learning and growth opportunities for as many studentathletes as possible. We will attempt to work with local league & community opportunities to provide opportunities we cannot provide.

FHSAA Eligibility • Must be a registered & enrolled student at University • Must be younger than 19 years old on July 1, each year • Has 4 years of eligibility upon completion of 8 th grade (8 consecutive semesters) • Must maintain a cumulative unweighted GPA of 2. 0 or higher • 9 th graders – must be regularly promoted to ninth grade, satisfactory attendance & discipline in 8 th grade.

What Happens When YOU are Ineligible? • Students who are ruled ineligible due to academics are not allowed to compete in games for one semester.

Pay to Participate • Volusia County School District Fee – allows each athletic department to fund operations • Does not guarantee playing time • $75. 00 for your first sport • $25. 00 for your second sport • No additional fee for 3 rd or 4 th sport • Is payable each year • Recommended to pay online

Team Fees § Many teams have a team fee. § Depends on the team what it is used for… § Personal Uniform needs (Swimsuits, socks, hats, etc. ) § Team Gear – Team t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. § End of Season Awards and Banquets or Team Get Togethers § Usually payable before the first competition § Can be paid online § Some teams have sponsorship opportunities to help offset the fees.

§ Sportsmanship is Everyone’s Responsibility! § Remember that everyone involved is: § A Human – anyone can make a mistake § Someone’s spouse, child, brother/sister How would you want others to treat your family? § Please remember you – a fan, a parent, a spectator – represent University High School!

Sportsmanship • We expect… – Players to Play – Coaches to Coach – Officials to Officiate – Spectators to CHEER!!!! • Please allow everyone to do their job • Please respect Players, Coaches, Officials, and other Spectators • As a school we wish to demonstrate hospitality to our guests. We play the game between the lines and ask that everyone treat others as you would wish your child, spouse, family member to be treated if they were in that position

The Role of Parents § Be Supportive, Be Present, Be Encouraging § Be YOUR Child’s #1 Fan! § Please allow coaches to coach during practice and games without interference. Please do not put your child in a situation of whether to listen to you or to listen to their coach. If you have a concern, please contact the coach for a meeting. Approaching a coach after a competition is not a good time. § Captain’s Council Statement “Parents, please understand that growing up and separating myself from you is natural. Please allow me to grow up and become independent. ”

Athletic Facilities Most teams practice and play on campus…with a few exceptions Soccer – practice @Bennett, games on campus Swimming – practice & games @ Deltona YMCA Bowling – practice & games @ Bowling Alley in Orange City Golf – practice & games @Debary Golf & Country Parents are responsible for transportation to practice, home competitions held at off site facilities and some away competitions.

Practice & Try-Out Expectations • Attendance at practices is mandatory. – Excused absences must be communicated to the coach before the absence – Repeated absences may result from dismissal from the team – Missing teammates hurts the development of the team • Try-Out Procedures will be communicated on first day of practice – There are multiple factors that are considered when selecting a team – It is often the most difficult aspect of coaching – There are NO guaranteed spots on teams or playing time. – Coaches decisions are final. – If an athlete wishes to know what areas should be improved on for future consideration, the athlete should schedule an opportunity to speak with the coach. This will help the student-athlete develop their own self-advocacy and communication skills.

Admission to Events Expect to pay admission for any and all games – Home & Away Tournaments and Varsity Football will usually have parking fees Post Season (Districts/Regionals/States) will have increased ticket prices as dictated by the FHSAA. Most ticket sales will be online. Concessions, parking, some gates will be cash only.

Signing Up & Paperwork üPaperwork includes more than just the physical. üPaperwork & Physicals must be done every year. üTurn in the pages the doctor signed to the Athletic Office (not to a coach) üYour physical from River Springs does not just transfer to UHS.
