What is SOCCOM? • SHCP SOCCOM – Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish Social Communication Committee. • PPC mandated to revive SOCCOM. • Launched on 22/10/12. • Not only to revive & rejuvenate but to develop a viable, sustainable and effective Parish level Social communication in form and substance for evangelization by reaching out to all SHC Parishioners and beyond.

Catholic Church Guidelines/Instruction on Social Communication • 1. “Inter Mirifica” - The Vatican Council II (12/63) Decree on Media of Social Communications. • 2. Communio et Progressio on Pastoral Instruction published on 23/3/1971. • 3. Aetatis Novae, on Pastoral Instruction was published in 1992. • 4. In 2005, Blessed John Paul II wrote his final apostolic letter, The Rapid Development

Social Communication defined (1) Social interaction, Social skills (Ss) (2) Communication or Communication skills (Cs) (3) Language or Language skills (Ls) Equation for SOCCOM: Combine, integral and interpersonal use of the above 3 • Ss + Cs + Ls = SOCCOM • • •

TERM OF REFERENCE (TOR) • 1. Tap into this new dimension of speedy and instantaneous information dissemination within and among our SHC Parishioners. • Especially the so-called 80% non-participative or non-group majority parishioners through the social Media and / or PFPN.

TOR • 2. Coordinating body/ linkage on Parish level Pastoral matters and issues with Diocesan SOCCOM commission. • 3. Creating a sense of care, personal touch and linkage with SHC Groups/ Ministries/Youth/ Parishioners to instill a sense of identity & belonging to SHCP. • New Approach/ Way of being Church.

Proposed SOCCOM structure • Parish Priest/ Asst. Parish Priests/ PPC • Parish SOCCOM CORE TEAM (12 + 2 CMI) 3 each from 3 language groups + 3 Y +1 sign L. • Sub- committees of Portfolios/ Groups/Youth liaison to facilitate Parish level.

TOR • Portfolios – Advertising, publicity, PR, publishing, photography, reporting, editing, web master, graphics designs, distribution etc to be headed by a Core team member. • Decision making process: By consensus with the approval from the Parish priest.

How to SOCCOM ? ? (1) Social interaction, Social skills, (2) Communication or Communication skills (3) Language or Language skills. In short, it’s the Masterly use of these 3 SCL combined. • The family is where and when we first learn "how" to communicate. • Communication starts in womb and at Family. • •

How to SOCCOM? ? • Not only Called to invite people into the Church, but also to bring the Church to the people. • Bringing the Gospel to social media sites is giving people easy access to Christians resources where they are there already !! • This can improve people’s lives, gives hope, comfort and salvation (Pope Francis).

Called to SOCCOM • • • Essential to communicate – social beings. Communication starts with the Family. Do not stop there. Proceed from Family to Parish Family. Is SHCP communicating well through SOCCOM?

Called to SOCCOM • Can SHCP emulate the Perfect communicator like Jesus in the Sermon on the mount? • Can SHCP become great communicators like St. Peter (in Pentecost) and St. Paul at Areopagus? • If not; Why not? – Lacking YOUR talents/efforts? • You can make the DIFFERENCE. • God called you to become SHCP SOCCOM in building His Kingdom here and now.

Putting it all Together • 1. Learn to understand the Pastoral nature, process and objectives of all Parish level issues/ matters/concerns/events/programs. • 2. Formulate policies on what can or cannot be published/ disseminated and form a panel/ mechanism to vet through all articles/news/features to be published or uploaded to website/ media

SHCP office, PFPN Coordinator is to liaise and coordinate vertically and horizontally in the structure. • Terms of office : 3 years for SOCCOM core team members & sub- committees/ Groups/ Youth liaison. • •

Mission • The Gist/Essence of SOCCOM’S Calling: • Building a committed Parish Pastoral Community of Social communication; journeying together with SHCP as Christcentered family member in reaching out to evangelise through social media. • Building the people of God in, of and for the Parish through Social media.
