CINDY CHATTERSON For Cindy Chatterson, life fell apart the same way it does for

CINDY CHATTERSON For Cindy Chatterson, life fell apart the same way it does for a lot of women serving time at the Utah State Prison. She got into a bad relationship, became addicted to meth and began forging checks to pay for the drug. She calls this lifestyle a “way of survival for me. ” Cindy resorted to drugs and alcohol and what she refers to as “the sick cycle”. Cindy is hopeful the cycle is over. Thanks to Excell’s substance abuse program, she states that she is prepared to lead a different kind of life.

Trauma & Substance Use Disorders An estimated 85% to 90% of women in prison

Trauma & Substance Use Disorders An estimated 85% to 90% of women in prison have experienced some type of trauma in their lives. Women typically use substances to mask trauma, therefore Excell has an emphasis on treating trauma and being gender responsive. Through monthly Women Summit meetings, Corrections and Community Partners work on solutions to these women’s needs.

YPREP Throughout treatment and especially prior to completing the Residential program, clients focus on

YPREP Throughout treatment and especially prior to completing the Residential program, clients focus on planning for their transition from prisons to parole. Female Clients work with the Your Parole Requires Extensive Preparation (YPREP) team and all offenders work with their Caseworker to establish and finalize their transition plans. This requires preparation prior to release relative to their individual needs such as: Child Care, Education, Employment, Health Care, Housing and Transportation. YPREP classes are taught by persons from various service agencies that help them improve their social and working skills and also assist them in making contact with needed services on the outside. Parolees’ Access to Treatment (PATR) monies help pay for aftercare and wrap around services as well.
