Gearing up to become a Four-Year Medical School! Like the RPM acronym implies, we’re gearing up so we are ready for first year students and ready to transform the curriculum.

Why make Peoria a four-year medical school? Adding the first-year medical students (M 1

Why make Peoria a four-year medical school? Adding the first-year medical students (M 1 s) at Peoria will improve the educational experience for students, including: • Streamline curriculum across all four years; earlier clinical exposure • Improve student recruitment • Improve future physician retention • Better cohort development (current M 1 s have limited guidance from upperclassmen)

Why Did This Change? We have desired to be a four year school for

Why Did This Change? We have desired to be a four year school for some time. However, the transition was precipitated when the U of I Board of Trustees approved formation of the Carle-Illinois College of Medicine. This new school in Urbana-Champaign will be geared toward medicine, engineering and entrepreneurship and the targeted date for its first class is 2018.

What is the transition plan? The Urbana-Champaign regional COM campus will be phased out

What is the transition plan? The Urbana-Champaign regional COM campus will be phased out by 2022, after fulfilling responsibilities to current students. The length of the Medical Scholars Program (the MD/Ph. D program) extends the time frame.

In the fall of 2017, both Peoria and Rockford will welcome the first classes of M 1 s to their respective sites These M 1 students will have the “transformed” curriculum In fall 2017 we will also welcome the M 2 class to Peoria which will be the last class in the current curriculum.

How many students? • We expect about 55 first-year students. (Same as usual) •

How many students? • We expect about 55 first-year students. (Same as usual) • Total enrollment for M 1 -M 4 will average nearly 220 students (up from 185) in Peoria. • Rockford would have a similar number of students.

What needs to happen to accommodate the M 1 class in Peoria? Three primary things must take place: • Revamp the first/second year curriculum and prepare Peoria to deliver it • Renovate key facility space • Hire new faculty & staff And it all must take place in 16 months

The Perfect Storm A curricular transformation is occurring across all four years of medical education with the goal to implement the transformed curriculum in Peoria, Chicago and Rockford in 2017. Initial revisions in the preclinical years Revisions in clinical rotations will follow The LCME is coming in 2017 (Accrediting Body for Medical Schools).
