Organism: Any living Thing
Living Things Living things are made of cells & carry out life processes Ingestion digestion removal of waste Response to stimuli growth and repair gas exchange reproduction
1. Living things are made of cells A cell is the basic building block that makes up all living things Cells are alive & found in ALL organisms contain all materials necessary for life & can perform al life functions!
What Do Cells Do? Cells perform numerous functions cellular respiration/use energy waste breakdown and removal growth and division and cellular transport
All living things are made of 1 or more cells Plant Cells Human Skin Cells
Unicellular Organisms uni =1 Organisms made of only ONE cell Example: Bacteria/Protista Less advanced
Multicellular Organisms Multi = many Organisms made of many cells Examples: Plants, Animals, & Fungi
Multicellular Lion Made of more than one cell Unicellular Paramecium Made of only one cell Multicellular vs. Unicellular
Unicellular organisms perform all activities inside one cell!
Asexual Reproduction
Sexual Reproduction
Multicellular Organisms have specialized cells that are organized
Levels of Organization in Cells in multicellular organisms must be organized to perform specialized functions. *Division of Labor Cells Tissues Organ System
Levels of Organization Tissue- group of cells performing same function Organ- group of tissues performing same function Organ System- group of organs performing same function

Cellular Organization Video 6: 20 -11: 50 min
Review The A. B. C. D. simplest level of organization is: The cell Tissues Organ systems
Homeostasis Cells & living things must keep stable conditions to survive Homeostasis: the process of maintaining stable conditions. Ex: Maintaining body temperature
Review Which is NOT an example of homeostasis? A. Keeping a constant body temperature B. Maintaining steady blood sugar C. Sweating to keep cool D. These are ALL examples
Ingestion & Digestion Some organism ingest or eat food, while others make their own through photosynthesis Organisms must digest (break down) food in order to obtain energy
Waste Removal Organisms must be able to get rid of unnecessary or harmful wastes = excretion
Response & Stimulus: a change in the environment Response: a movement, action, or change in behavior because of a stimulus Example: Blinking
Growth & Repair Growth = get bigger Organisms grow by producing more cells Development you grow Organisms = change as must be able to repair damaged cells!
Gas Exchange Organisms exchange gases with the environment through: Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration Both processes are important for obtaining energy for cells
Reproduction Sexual Reproduction: requires two parents Offspring will be different Example: Humans & Animals Asexual Reproduction: requires one parent Offspring will be clones Examples: Bacteria
Review A flower bends toward the sunlight…what is the stimulus? A. B. C. D. The flower bending The sunlight The wind The temperature
Needs of Living Things
How do organisms STAY Alive? They need: Shelter Water Food Gases (O 2 & CO 2) Living Space Each organisms has a range of conditions it must meet to stay alive!
Shelter A place to be safe from predators & the elements (weather)
Water Must have water for all chemical activities Water makes up most of our cells
Food Provides an energy source All living things need energy Autotrophs: Make their own Heterotrophs: Must find food
Living Space Need space to find food, water, mates If there is not enough space = competition between organisms
Review Which A. B. C. D. is NOT a need of living things? Food Water Reproduction Shelter
