Lecha = “Go forth” The 3 rd Torah Portion Reading 3 rd reading in the Book of Genesis 12: 1 – 17: 27 Haftarah: Isaiah 40: 27 – 41: 16 Gospel: Matthew 1: 1 -17

Genesis 12 • • God calls Abram; blesses him with a promise of Christ He departs with Lot from Haran Abram journeys through Canaan, which is promised him in a vision He is driven by a famine into Egypt Sarai is taken by Pharaoh, Who is compelled by plagues to restore her

Genesis 13 • Abram and Lot return out of Egypt and agree to separate • Lot goes to Sodom • God renews the promise to Abram

Genesis 14: 11 -14 (KJV) 11 And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way. 12 And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed. 13 And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram. 14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.

Genesis 15 • God encourages Abram • Abram complains for lack of an heir • Canaan promised again

Genesis 16 • Sarai, being barren gives Hagar to Abram • Hagar despises her mistress, is punished, and runs away • An angel sends her back, telling her she will bear a child • Hagar bears a son who is named Ishmael

Genesis 17 • God renews the covenant with Abram • Sarai’s name is changed, and she is blessed • Abraham and Ishmael are circumcised

Lecha – Matthew 1 The genealogy which opens the Gospel of Matthew and the New Testament is in many respects the most important document in the Scriptures. The entire Bible rests upon its accuracy. The New Testament rests upon the accuracy of this genealogy because it establishes the fact that the Lord Jesus Christ is of the line of Abraham and of the line of David. Both are very important. The line of Abraham places Him in the nation, and the line of David puts Him on the throne -- He is in that royal line.

Lecha – Matthew 1 Jesus is the Son of Abraham and it is very important that He be the Son of Abraham, because God had said to Abraham, ". . . in thy seed shall the nations of the earth be blessed. . . " (Gen. 22: 18). And in Galatians 3: 16 Paul explains who that "seed" is: "Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ. " So Jesus Christ is the Son of Abraham.

Lecha In Jesus' day it was indeed unusual to find in a genealogy a woman's name -- yet here we have four names. They are not only four women; they are four Gentiles. 1. 2. 3. 4. Thamar Rachab Ruth Bathsheba

Thamar "Thamar" is the first one, and she is mentioned in verse three. Her story is in Genesis 38, and there she is called Tamar. Genesis 38: 6 -8 (KJV) 6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar. 7 And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him. 8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

Thamar Genesis 38: 9 -11 (KJV) 9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. 10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also. 11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

Thamar Genesis 38: 13 -16 (KJV) 13 And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep. 14 And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife. 15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face. 16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law. )

Thamar Genesis 38: 24 -26 (KJV) 24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt. 25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff. 26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

Thamar Leviticus 21: 9 (KJV) 9 And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.

Rahab Joshua 2: 1 -3 (KJV) Jos 1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there. 2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country. 3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country.

Rahab Joshua 2: 8 -11 (KJV) Jos 8 And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof; 9 And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. 10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. 11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
