Return to Table of Contents Track-Parenting Tips from a Former Olympian How can your parents earn a gold medal for helping you? By following these suggestions from Anthony Sandoval, M. D. , winner of the 1980 U. S. Olympic Marathon Trial, and cardiologist in Los Alamos, N. M. He and his wife, Mary, have six children, four of whom are high school or college runners. 1. Show your child love-this should guide all parents' team involvement. 2. Be positive, especially during hard times such as poor races, injuries, and team conflicts. 3. Keep things in perspective. Your youngster is a child first, a student second, an athlete third. 4. Sports are games, so have fun, and let your child have fun, too. 5. You are the parent, your child is the athlete. Remember that this is your child's endeavor, not yours. 6. Your child is a citizen of a team, and your actions may affect other team members. 7. Be accepting of the coaches, who are trying to do their best. 8. Lighten up and keep a sense of humor.
