This is us: KMPT – music - this is me • • Sheila is an experienced senior finance professional who has fulfilled a variety of roles during her career in the NHS. Sheila is a Chartered Management Accountant and has over fifteen years’ experience in NHS Providers. She was awarded HFMA Deputy Director of Finance of the Year 2016. In her current role as Deputy Director of Finance, she is responsible for Financial Accounts, Financial Management, Procurement and Payroll. Our Trust has a keen Finance team, always willing to share information, benchmarking and best practice. A key driver in pushing the Finance department forward in the pursuance of excellence. Teamwork • I’m not going to tell any of you anything you don’t already know. • The key part of gaining the accreditation is embedding a positive culture of excellence. • I’d like to say that I’ve only been with the Trust a year and in that time we have achieved level 1 & 2 FFF accreditation and. . . • that ‘of course is down to me’! I have had the fortune to be able to join a very good team with aspirations to be great. • Taking a leaf out of the book from the Northern Trusts. – Quality performance is not down to being able to annotate a quality performance. For an accreditation it’s about ‘living the dream’. Brilliant care through brilliant people

Stuart from Skills Development Network suggested that we should apply. • We got volunteers • Sheila and Victoria, set the scene – objectives / goals. ‘We can’t be the first in Kent, Surrey & Sussex but we can be the first to get to level 3 in Kent’ Brilliant care through brilliant people

Living the dream – Level 1 accreditation We used the proforma to give us the structure of what we needed to demonstrate. As we were collating evidence for level one it became apparent that we should be applying for level 2. Therefore we worked at holding all our evidence in central files that we could use in the future. Brilliant care through brilliant people

Level 2 – more evidence • • Teamwork – Embedded Culture – The Trust hosts Skills Development Network for Kent, Surrey and Sussex which the Do. F manages proactively. Our Do. F was also a member of the national Board for staff development. In particular the Aspiring Directors programme, sitting on the steering group to support the design of the national programme, as well as being an alumni herself. Level 2 continued Strive for excellence: • Successful Level 1 accreditation was driven by the Do. F and senior team, and further accreditation remains at the top of the Agenda of objectives in the Finance Department and is discussed at team meetings. Do not take your eye of the ball. • The Finance department have a competency framework designed by the DDo. F which is used as part of supervisions and the annual appraisal cycle. • This supports staff in identifying areas for development, as well as required progression for their next career move. • • Level 2 Continued Training, coaching & mentoring. Training logs are maintained within the finance team and an annual review is undertaken against the competency framework. These values are embedded in what we do. The Trust encourages "Working With” days. The department encourages attendance at HFMA events and gives staff the ‘time’ to attend. Trust has received accreditation from AAT, ACCA & CIMA. All employees have opportunities to study for professional development. Brilliant care through brilliant people

Training, Coaching & mentoring continued. • Case studies include: • Assistant Management Accountant supported through ACCA qualification, now fully qualified Finance Business Partner. • AAT students supported & Coached. • Currently have existing team members studying, CIMA & AAT and recently enrolled one member to undertake CIMA via the apprenticeship route via BPP. (Exciting times). • The whole team was encouraged to attend the local branch HFMA conference of which 14 attended (out of 23). Brilliant care through brilliant people

The Trust has a Work Placement Scheme in which it looks for work experience for ex-service users looking to return to work. We also use Insights profiling to understand our colleagues. Proud to be part of a success story • Each year the structure of the team is reviewed as part of business planning, and key areas such as succession planning, upcoming retirements, training and competence are discussed. • There a significant number of team members who have formal and informal flexible working patterns to enable staff to maximise their work life balance. • There is collaborative working across the organisation between Clinical staff and finance, HR and other non clinical professionals. Proud to be part of a success story • • • We produce KPIs on a monthly basis for all areas of Finance. Within the Board report we provide the single oversight framework and updated on statutory targets. A set of fully reconciled summary accounts and relevant supporting notes are produced for the organisation monthly and discussed in a range of forums. Income and Expenditure reports are produced monthly and presented in summary format at the Quality and Performance Review Meetings. A Business continuity plan is in place. This is currently under review due to the current economic potential changes incorporating the challenges presented by ‘Brexit’. The FFF toolkit - 4 strengths is linked to the competency framework.
