Urban Problems in the Early 1900 s Sticker Vote • Vote on the urban problem that you feel was the most severe in the early 1900 s.

Should the government help immigrants reach the “American Dream? ”

§ Who: Immigrants (later Native Americans) § What: Learned about American history, culture, customs, & mannerisms through a program of education called the Americanization Movement. § When: Began 1900 s § Where: U. S.

§ Why: The Americanization Movement was designed to help immigrants assimilate into American culture § How: § Schools and voluntary associations provided programs aimed at teaching immigrants § English language, American history, government – subjects that were necessary to help the newcomers become citizens § teaching of other subjects, like cooking and social etiquette.

Social Darwinism § Social Darwinism - the idea that humans compete in a struggle for existence in which natural selection results in “survival of the fittest. ” Fitness is demonstrated with wealth, property, and social status.

Social Gospel § Early religious movement and reform program that responded to the poverty created by industrialism and preached salvation through service to the poor

Social Darwinism or Social Gospel? § base their beliefs on theories of evolution developed by British naturalist Charles Darwin who said that the weaker in society are naturally “weeded out. ”

Billy Sunday § Billy Sunday, full name William Ashley Sunday (1863 -1935), American Fundamentalist preacher. § Sunday played professional baseball from 1883 until 1891, when he began working for the Young Men's Christian Association in Chicago. § Sunday was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1903, seven years after he had become an evangelist. § His approximately 300 revivals, conducted throughout the U. S. , attracted audiences estimated at 100 million, a total thought by some to be the largest number of people ever evangelized by one person before the use of broadcasting. § leader in the Prohibition movement, and his largest revival, held in New York City in 1917, was organized for that cause.

Dwight Moody § Dwight L. Moody (1837 -99), American evangelist. § 1856 - left his work as a shoe salesman in Boston to engage in missionary work in Chicago. § His Sunday school in North Market Hall developed and eventually became the Moody Memorial Church § Held a series of revival meetings in America and also visited Britain. § In 1879 Moody opened the Northfield Seminary (later, School) for Young Women in his hometown and in 1881 the Mount Hermon School for Boys in the nearby town of Gill. § In 1886 he founded the Chicago Evangelization Society (now known as the Moody Bible Institute) in Chicago to train Christian workers.

William Graham Sumner § William Graham Sumner (1840 -1910), American sociologist and teacher, born in Paterson, New Jersey. § A proponent of social Darwinism, Sumner opposed any governmental interference in the free-market economy, whether in the form of tariffs to help businesses or antitrust laws to restrain them. § Sumner was an influential writer and professor at Yale University from 1872 to 1909.

The Supreme Court should rule in favor of the Baptist Church in this case due to the 1 st amendment and “free speech. ”
