PEEC example The article “Coming out to my Parents” tells the story of a 17 year old teenager named Lucas Johnson, and his struggle not only with his sexuality, but also with coming out to his family and friends. He first comes out to his friends, as he believed that it would be easiest to start with them, and then afterwards, after coming to better terms with his sexuality, he would come out to his parents. Since he had “always been especially close with [his] mother, ” he comes out to her first, and even though he is never able to get the words out of his mouth to tell her, she understands what he is attempting to say and accepts his decision (Johnson 1). He now faced the real challenge in telling his father. He struggles with telling him and eventually realizes he cannot, to which his mother tells his father. After a few weeks, Lucas and his father finally talk to each other on the subject and to Lucas’ amazement, his father had gone out and educated himself on the subject before coming to talk to him. Over the next few months, Lucas becomes more comfortable with his identity and really starts to be amazed with his father’s acceptance. Not only was his father comfortable making culturally sensitive remarks about his sexuality in a humoristic manner, but at his work, he also identified “his office as a safe space” proving to Lucas that his father was entirely accepting of who he was (Johnson 2). Lucas then goes on to say that he did not write the article to be a LGBT activist, in reality he wrote it to show that not only is he proud of being gay, but he is even more proud in his father.
