Applying to College • Senior Packets will be distributed to all juniors by the end of the school year in June • Begin thinking of two teachers who will write recommendation letters • College essays should be error–free for submission (edit carefully) • Choose five colleges including “Safety”, “Realistic” & “Reach” • Individual Senior Meetings will be scheduled for every student to discuss post-secondary plans beginning end of September • Apply EARLY to increase chances of acceptance
Common Application • The Common Application is a not–for–profit membership organization that, since its founding over 35 years ago, has been committed to providing reliable services that promote equity, access, and integrity • Serves students, member institutions, and secondary schools • Membership open to colleges and universities that promote access by evaluating students using a holistic selection process • There are currently applications to over 500 members institutions. • Students can link Naviance to the Common Application
What can I do now? ? ? • Research possible majors and potential colleges • Visit, Visit (to make sure it’s a good “fit”) • Develop and/or update Resume in Naviance • Attend Parent Naviance Night in the fall • Plan to take SAT or ACT this spring and next fall • Think about which teachers to ask for recommendations

Essay and Teacher Recommendation Essay • Look at topics and begin brainstorming now • Senior English Teachers will address college essay • Receive feedback from teachers, parents, etc. and edit and rewrite several times • Answer honestly • Let the reader get to know who you are • Can make a difference if college is undecided Recommendations • Check if required • 2 -3 minimum • Best choice: Teacher who knows you personally • Teacher related to college major • At least 1 academic teacher • Coach or advisor is a good secondary letter

RCBC & Two Year Colleges Career Associates Degrees • Allow you to go straight into the workforce • Examples: Culinary Arts, Dental Hygiene, Fire Science, Health Sciences, Radiography AA or AS to Transfer to a 4 Year College • Complete basic course requirements for the first half of your bachelor’s degree • Check for Articulation Programs with 4 year colleges: RCBC 3+1 Program for selected majors • Meet with Transfer Advisor at end of freshman year
RCBC Spring Ahead Program • Informational meeting by RCBC advisor (Fall) • Complete RCBC Application Online (FREE) • Take Accuplacer Test at CHS (Winter) • Bus Trip to RCBC to review test results and schedule classes for fall (Spring) • Important to participate even if RCBC is “safety” school
RCBC CAP Program • Students enrolled in RCBC CAP designated courses may earn RCBC credits for a fee (approx. $150 per 3 credit course) • Must enroll by deadline (mid-October) • Student must earn “C” or better in course • CAP payments are nonrefundable • CAP credits may or may not be accepted • Students’ responsibility to contact college regarding their policies • Students must request a transcript from RCBC to their 4 year college in late July/August
NJ STARS • Scholarship program • New Jersey residents that covers the cost of tuition at New Jersey's 19 community colleges. • Top 15 percent of their high school class from junior year • Five (5) semesters of eligibility for NJ STARS. • Must maintain a 3. 0 GPA • Does not cover fees, books, or remedial, pre-college courses
NJ STARS II • Scholarship towards a Bachelor's Degree • New Jersey community college NJ STARS students who earn their associate's degrees with a 3. 25 grade point average or better are eligible • Up to a $2, 500 per year NJ STARS II scholarship • Any New Jersey public or independent NJ TAGparticipating four-year college or university.
