What is UWAS? Courses on art, design, and creative practices that are open for all Aalto students. UWAS courses are rooted in transdisciplinarity: creativity does not belong only to the arts. This is why you don’t have to have any previous knowledge or skills in the arts to participate in UWAS courses. UWAS’s aim is to strengthen transdisciplinary collaboration across Aalto (as part of Aalto’s strategy) 2. 3. 2021 2

What UWAS is not? Aalto ARTS courses opened to all Aalto students àEach UWAS course is planned and taught specifically for UWAS. None of our courses belong to other degree programs. Aalto’s “craft courses” àEvery UWAS course draws from a wide range of expertise in art, research, and pedagogy. Technique courses Techniques and tools are always connected to broader frames of thinking and learning. 2. 3. 2021 3

What UWAS offers? Transdisciplinary arts-based teaching and possibility to connect with students from other fields. This year we’re offering 31 courses These courses focus on e. g. creative writing, game design, sound technology, optics in art and science, philosophy of work through cinema… 2. 3. 2021 4

Course Thematics 2018 -2019 UWAS courses are organized under seven thematic categories that link the course contents to larger, transdisciplinary questions. These categories are: Global and Local Issues Sites and Environments Crises and Turning Points Senses Materials Narratives Technologies. In addition, UWAS Varied Contents courses are project-based courses on topical, changing issues. UWAS is also participating in piloting Math. Course Registration UWAS courses are electives and do not have any prerequisites. Bachelor and Master degree students from every level are welcome to attend, including exchange students. Registration order is not the primary selection criteria for this course. In order to ensure that students from different programs and schools of Aalto University may take UWAS courses, the selection is also based on the variety of students' disciplines.
