UWAS: University. Wide Art Studies Juuso Tervo 2020
What is UWAS? Courses on art, design, and creative practices that are open for all Aalto Bachelor and Master degree students. UWAS courses are rooted in transdisciplinarity: creativity does not belong only to the arts. This is why students participating in UWAS courses do not have to have any previous knowledge or skills in art, design, or architecture. UWAS’s aim is to strengthen arts-based transdisciplinary collaboration across Aalto as part of Aalto’s mission 8. 3. 2021 2
What UWAS is not? Preexisting Aalto ARTS courses opened to all Aalto students Ø Each UWAS course is planned and taught specifically for UWAS. None of our courses belong to other programs in Aalto. Art and Design “dumbed down” Ø Every UWAS course draws from a wide range of expertise in art, research, and pedagogy. Advanced students are welcome to join our courses as well. Technique courses Ø Techniques and tools are always connected to broader frames of thinking and learning. 8. 3. 2021 3
Why to take a UWAS course/courses? • Meet students outside your program and/or school • Try out different ways of learning and teaching in an interdisciplinary environment • Test the limits of your own discipline and share your expertise with other students. Venture boldly to unknown territories! This year we have courses on e. g. creative writing, game design, gender and technology, disasters, neurology and cinema… So there is plenty to choose from! 8. 3. 2021 4
Courses 2020 -2021
UWAS Course Categories For 2020 -2022, UWAS courses are organized under six thematic categories that link the course contents to larger, transdisciplinary questions. These categories mioght also help to get an idea of what is the course about. Anthropocene courses address issues such as global warming, sustainability, resources, and energy. They respond to and reflect on the great challenges related to our current geological era. Actions courses deal with different aspects of making and creating in arts, design, and architecture, and explore their connections to practices in other fields. Reflections courses offer theoretical and critical approaches to present human and non-human conditions. This might include explorations of futures and utopias, identity and identities, and global and local ecosystems. Manifestations courses deal with communication, visualization, presentation, and representation of information, how is it applied, and how to understand its impacts. Collaborations courses explore participatory and cooperative practices in arts, design, and architecture, and their links to other fields. Tensions courses explore traditions, paradigms, and histories between disciplines, and how they are expressed and reflected upon today. 8. 3. 2021 6
