The Rich Young Ruler Mark 10: 17 -22

The Rich Young Ruler • Has a desire and interest in spiritual matters • Wants to know what it will take to inherit eternal life (v. 17) • Knows and has kept the commandments from his youth (v. 18) • Colossian 3: 2 – Set our minds on things above • 1 Peter 2: 2 – Desire the word of God • Hebrews 11: 6 –Diligently seek God

The Rich Young Ruler • Has respect and desire for Jesus and his teaching • Ran and knelt before Jesus (v. 17) • Calls him good teacher (v. 17) • Matthew 17: 5 – We are to hear and listen to Jesus • Matthew 28: 18 – All authority has been given to Jesus • 1 Corinthians 11: 1 – Imitate those as much as they imitate Jesus

The Rich Young Ruler • Compared to the world he is an outstanding individual • Kept the commandments listed (v. 19 -20) • Kept them from his youth (v. 20) • Galatians 5: 19 -21 – Works of the flesh, will not inherit the kingdom of God • 1 Corinthians 6: 9 -10 – Things the unrighteous do, will not inherit the kingdom of God

The Rich Young Ruler • His trust is in his earthly riches • Went away sorrowful because he had great possessions (v. 22) • It is hard for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God (v. 24) • Matthew 6: 19 -20 – Treasures are not to be on our earthly possessions

The Rich Young Ruler • Has something that he is unwilling to give up • For the rich young ruler it was his earthly riches (v. 2122) • Hebrews 12: 1 – Lay aside every weight and sin • Luke 14: 26 -27 – Family and self are not to come before Christ • 1 John 2: 15 -17 – We are not to love the world and the things in it

The Rich Young Ruler • Jesus has love and concern for him • Jesus, looking at him, loved him (v. 21) • John 3: 16 – God gave his Son • Romans 5: 8 – Christ died for us • John 15: 13 – Greater love has no one than to lay down his life for his friend • Jesus did not change his demands (v. 21) • 2 Samuel 6: 6 -7 – Uzzah was struck dead for his error (putting his hand on the ark of God)
