The Lean Years In the general elections of 1928 the Nazis: Won only 12 seats Polled only 810, 000 votes (2. 6% of the national vote) Ended up being the eighth biggest Reichstag party

1924 -1928 During this era the Nazi party would struggle to gain popularity and votes. This was the Weimar Republic’s ‘Golden Era’ during which US loans that were organised by Stresemann meant that many people did not feel impoverished. Why would the ‘Golden Era’ result in a reduction in votes for the Nazi party?

Why didn’t the Nazis win? Since 1923 inflation had eased, employment had increased and the public were better off. This was largely due to the work of Gustav Stresemann, who was popular both in Germany and abroad. In 1925 Hindenburg, the well-respected 78 year old ex-field marshal of the German army, became president. His reputation restored confidence in the Weimar Republic. As a result of all of the above, voters supported the Weimar government and the moderate parties instead of voting for extremists like the Nazis.

Mein Kampf While in prison Hitler wrote his book, Mein Kampf (My struggle). It was released in 1925. It details Hitler’s political and racial views; as well as his plans for restoring Germany to greatness. He did not believe in the mixing of races and greatly pushed the purity of the German race. Substantial portions of Mein Kampf focuses on his hatred of the Jewish race, in which he refers to them as "parasites" and uses words such as "disgust" when referring to them.

Mein Kampf The book sets out the following policies: National Socialism – loyalty to Germany, racial purity, equality and state control of the economy. Racism – the triumph of the Aryan race by armed force, because all races, especially the Jews, were inferior to the Aryan (pure German) ‘Master Race’. Lebensraum – to expand into Poland Russia to get ‘Living Space’. Strong Government – complete obedience to the Führer.
