Dwelling in the Word: Ephesians 4. 1 -16 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all. 7 But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore it is said, ‘When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people. ’ 9(When it says, ‘He ascended’, what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things. ) 11 The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. 14 We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people’s trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. 15 But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knitted together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body’s growth in building itself up in love.

Psalm 85: 8 -13 8 Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts. 9 Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. 10 Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other. 11 Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky. 12 The Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. 13 Righteousness will go before him, and will make a path for his steps.

Gathering One: Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death that he died, he died to sin, once for all; All: but the life he lives, he lives to God. So also consider yourselves dead to sin, and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Gathering One: Alleluia. Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by a man came death, All: by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall be made alive. (Book of Common Prayer, 2019: 1 Corinthians 5: 7 -8; Romans 6: 9 -11; 1 Corinthians 15: 20 -22)

Where have we seen God active? Where are seeking God to act in our lives?

Prayerfully Conspiring with God One: Pilgrim God, you journey with us, coming alongside, walking our path. Thank you for loving us and not leaving us alone. Thank you for caring about our paths and not leaving us helpless. All: We confess sometimes we wish you would just get us to the destination. Sometimes we wish you would at least fix the path. Sometimes we yearn to not see through a glass darkly.

Prayerfully Conspiring with God One: This journey is hard. So much is broken. We’re not sure of how our story unfolds into Yours. Sometimes we wish you would do the walking for us. All: Sometimes we wish you were not a Pilgrim God. Sometimes we’re not sure we want to be a pilgrim people. Yet you faithfully journey with us, coming alongside, walking our path You invite us to faithfully journey with others when it is hard.

Prayerfully Conspiring with God One: You show us how to come alongside those who suffer brokenness, walking with those who feel sidelined. All: Pilgrim God, we welcome you and join you as pilgrim people. We commit to being like you, walking the path of love and justice for all. Amen.

Matthew 14: 22 -33 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking towards them on the lake. But when the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’ And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, ‘Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid. ’ Peter answered him, ‘Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. ’ He said, ‘Come. ’ So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Jesus immediately reached out his hand caught him, saying to him, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt? ’ When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God. ’

You Don’t Have to Walk on Water These are able sailors, mostly. • Windstorms are frequent • Rembrandt’s, Sea of Galilee • Not all disciples were fishermen • Man in red? • Wind and storms were part of the job. • Not something to fear, but to be prepared for. • The weather is not what startled them.

You Don’t Have to Walk on Water Is Jesus, more frightening than a storm? • The problem is not that he sunk. • The problem is that he got out of the boat at all. • He didn’t trust Jesus’ voice. This was his failing. • Jesus - in the midst of the storm – Emmanuel, God shows up
