The threshold • We are publishing with a threshold of 70 Ge. V •

The threshold • We are publishing with a threshold of 70 Ge. V • We detect significant signal above 40 Ge. V • Understanding our efficiency towards the goal of 40 Ge. V. A special task force (UHU) has been set up; preliminary physics results at 50 Ge. V. – Substantial improvement on DM studies and determination of cosmological constants 2

Cycle 1 (Feb 2005 -Apr 2006) • Statistics of physics runs for Cycle 1:

Cycle 1 (Feb 2005 -Apr 2006) • Statistics of physics runs for Cycle 1: – 1070 hours dark time out of 1714, plus 150 h “good technical runs”, and 212 hours moon • Moon time increasing to an asymptotical value ~1/3 – ~100 hours To. O (with some important results) • will increase with the increased number of collaborations – Suzaku, Swift, GLAST, AGILE, … • All data analyzed – Papers published or submitted for all positive signals, but 6 (Crab, Mkn 501, x, y, z, t) • 2 GRB observations during the primary burst • MAGIC Catalog opened (MAGIC Jxxx-yyy) 3

Cycle 2 • From period 42, starting on May 14, 2006, to period 54,

Cycle 2 • From period 42, starting on May 14, 2006, to period 54, ending on May 29, 2007 • 840 dark time hours recommended for observation time in Class A, plus a maximum (? ) of 236 h for To. O – – + 46% to AGN 28% to Galactic Sources 9% to Pulsars 14% to DM, including M 87 Special projects (t neutrinos, …) GRB fully accepted (36 h To. O) – going towards a further improvement of the response time 4

The second telescope • Structure finished in December 2005 (in schedule); works stopped since then • Second telescope is essential to improve performance (better angular resolution, lower threshold) and to reach HESS’ sensitivity at the Te. V • HESS has just finished the foundations of its 5 th telescope, the “big one”, which should lower the threshold below MAGIC – Presently, thanks to our lower threshold, we are competitive/complementary wrt HESS, but we risk to be again rushing to get them… 10

Conclusions • MAGIC is close to the design performance for 1 telescope – Threshold

Conclusions • MAGIC is close to the design performance for 1 telescope – Threshold of 70 Ge. V for physics analysis; close to understand down to 50 Ge. V, and signal from 40 Ge. V • MAGIC is delivering very good physics results – In 2006, 7 papers published (one in Science) and 2 submitted, with 3 new sources; 5 papers in the pipeline, with 3 -4 additional new sources • Cycle 2: important commitment to test more fundamental physics (DM, Lorentz violation, …) • Need financement for the mirrors on the second telescope to double the sensitivity and stay competitive with HESS – New 1 m 2 mirrors successfully tested on the 1 st telescope 17
