Examples of Viruses • HIV/AIDS • Hepatitis B • HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)/Genital Warts • Genital Herpes
Information about viruses • HIV/AIDS- The immune system eventually breaks down and is unable to fight off certain infections. – Slight fever, headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, weight loss, diarrhea, lack of appetite, purplish growths on skin. – HIV will turn into full blown AIDS and will result in death.
HIV FACT • At the end of 2008, an estimated 1, 178, 350 persons aged 13 and older were living with HIV infection in the United States. • 50, 000 people are newly infected with HIV each year in the United States
Information about viruses • Herpes- Recurring rash, painful blisters in pubic area • Hepatitis B- Can cause severe liver disease & death. • HPV/Genital Warts- Most infections are not visible, however, you may see warts on genitals or anus.
Description of viral STD’s • Not curable –Remains in the body for life –Some will or can cause death
Symptoms of viral STD’s • Fever • Headaches • Fatigue • Lack of appetite
Transmission of viral STD’s • Vaginal, and oral sex • Sharing needles with an infected person • Touching the infected area • Mother to child at birth or before
Treatment for viral STD’s • Medication – Only helps to relieve symptoms, not cure the virus. – Some of these medication (for HIV) are very expensive and not everyone can afford them.
Prevention of viral STD’s • Abstinence – 100% effective • Condoms
Examples of Bacteria's • Chlamydia • Gonorrhea • UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) • PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease)
Information about bacteria’s • Chlamydia- can cause sterility. Infects the urethra and causes bladder infections. – 2. 8 million people affected each year!!! – The most common • Gonorrhea- Can cause sterility, arthritis, & heart problems. • UTI- Women are at greater risk of developing a urinary tract infection than are men. • PID- Infection that harms the woman’s reproductive system. Can lead to sterility. Usually caused by Gonorrhea or Chlamydia.
Description of bacteria’s • They are curable • Most common type • Very treatable if taken care of right away.
Symptoms of bacterial STD’s • Fever • Chills • Dizziness • Nausea • Vomiting • Diarrhea • Muscle aches • Cramps
Transmission of bacterial STD’s • Vaginal, anal and oral sex • Touching infected area
Treatment for bacterial STD’s • Antibiotics
Prevention of bacterial STD’s • Abstinence • Condoms
Examples of Spirochete STD’s Syphilis is the only spirochete STD
Description of Spirochete • Spirochete is a type of bacteria • It is curable • 3 different stages (symptoms get worse at each stage)
Symptoms of Spirochete • Red, firm, wet sore • Rash • Flu-like symptoms • Difficulty walking • Numbness • Blindness • Possibly death
Transmission of Spirochete • Vaginal, and oral sex • Mother to baby during birth • Touching infected area (sore)
Treatment of Spirochete • Antibiotics
Prevention of Spirochete • Abstinence • Condoms
Examples of Protozoa STD’s • Trichomoniasis
Description of Protozoa • A protozoa is an organism whose cells have 1 nuclei. – Biology. a specialized, usually spherical mass of protoplasm encased in a double membrane, and found in most living eukaryotic cells, directing their growth, metabolism, and reproduction, and functioning in the transmission of genic characters. • Curable • Males pass on infection but rarely develop symptoms
Symptoms of a Protozoa • Girls: vaginal discharge, itchy, foul odor, painful urination, and painful intercourse. • Boys: Irritation in penis, and burning during urination. • Appears about 1 week after transmission.
Transmission of a protozoa • Vaginal, anal and oral sex
Treatment of a protozoa • Antibiotics
Prevention of protozoa • Abstinence • Condoms
Examples of Insect STD’s • Pubic Lice / Crabs • Scabies
Description of Insects • Curable • Insects live and feed on blood
Symptoms of Insects • Pimples/Bumps • Rash • Itching
Transmission of Insects • Vaginal, anal and oral sex • Touching infected area • Can be transmitted through infected towels and sheets.
Treatment of Insects • Topical Creams
Prevention of Insects • Abstinence
