Lab Safety Rules These safety rules are enforced to keep everyone working in the lab safe. When you do not obey them, you put everyone at risk.

1. Accidents are unplanned events that may or may not result in injury.

2. Avoid “horseplay” in the lab at all times.

3. You must get permission before you use any tools or machines.

4. Safety glasses must be worn when using hand tools.

5. Report ALL injuries to Mrs. Johnson immediately.

6. Do not use tools and machines if you are sick, tired, or on medication.

7. Always use the right type of tool for the job.

8. Inspect all machines and tools for damage before using them.

9. If a tool breaks while you are using it, tell Mrs. Johnson immediately.

10. Never distract others while they are working.

11. Never operate a machine you have not been trained to use.

12. Disconnect a power cord by pulling from the plug.

13. Give your project your full attention.

14. If a utility knife is not in use it should be closed and on the counter.

15. When passing a pair of scissors, hand them with the handle facing out, blades closed and pointed toward you.

16. Keep your work area clear of tools, scraps, and other items.

17. Clean up all spills immediately.

18. Return all tools to their proper storage place when you are finished with them.

19. Make sure your work area is clean before you leave.

20. Safety is rule number 1.

Create a Safety Flyer • On the back of your handout draw a picture that represents your assigned safety rule. • Your drawing should cover the whole page. • Your drawing should be colorful and must include both words and images. • “White space” should be minimal.
