Unit 3 Student Learning Outcome • Use multiple texts that examine a significant public argument, identifying and analyzing the rhetorical strategies used to support their arguments. • Explain how those strategies contribute to the authors’ appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos. • Consider how those strategies are based on key assumptions the authors make about their audiences. • Evaluate the relative effectiveness of the texts with respect to the intended audiences.
Unit 3 • The topic is happiness. • You can narrow the topic in whichever way you wish (the how of happiness, money and happiness, science of happiness, etc. ) • You must analyze strategies in three different sources. • One source must be from class. • One source must be the movie (American Beauty). • One source you must find on your own.

1. Rhetorical Strategies • Rhetorical strategy is a particular way in which authors craft language—both consciously and subconsciously—so as to have an effect on readers. • Strategies are means of persuasion, ways of gaining a readers’ attention, interest, or agreement.

Precedent When an author or speaker argues from precedent, he or she references a previous situation, one that can be compared to the author’s situation. Examples: supreme court decisions, dating, Christmas
