Parts of Speech – what are they? Nouns Verbs Adjectives Adverbs Pronouns ? ? ? ? ? ?

Nouns • Definition: Person, place, thing or idea • Examples: student, school, pencil, knowledge

Nouns • Definition: Person, place, thing or idea • Examples: student, school, pencil, knowledge Nouns can sometimes look like verbs. Watch out! Example: “Walking” NOUN: Walking is healthy. VERB: She is walking.

Verbs • Definition: the action • Examples: jump, think, talks, is falling Watch out!

Verbs • Definition: the action • Examples: jump, think, talks, is falling Watch out! Verbs aren’t always physical actions that you can see. Examples: is, are, was, were, has, have

Adjectives • Definition: words that describe nouns • Examples: huge, happy, loving, rich, short

Adjectives • Definition: words that describe nouns • Examples: huge, happy, loving, rich, short Adjectives can often be turned into adverbs. Watch out! Examples: “quick” and “quickly” Adjective: He was quick on the track. Adverb: He runs quickly.

Adverbs • Definition: words that describe verbs, adding where/when/how the verbs happen • Examples:

Pronouns • Definition: a substitute for a noun • Examples: it, his, her, he,

Pronouns • Definition: a substitute for a noun • Examples: it, his, her, he, she, they, we, their The pronoun can come in the same sentence as the noun it’s substituting, or a different sentence. Watch out! Examples: Mark is going to his friend’s for dinner. After dinner, he will go to the movies.
